The First Division 1973-1974 is the thirty-second edition of the first Mexican division.

During this tournament, the CD Cruz Azul retained its title of Mexico champion in the past the seventeen best Mexican clubs.

Each of the eighteen clubs participating in the championship was confronted twice in the nineteen others. Then the best clashed during a final phase at the end of the season.

Only two places were qualifying for the Concacaf Champions Cup.

The competition took place in the same way as during the previous seasons:

  • The qualification phase: thirty-four championship days.
  • The final phase: round-trip confrontations from the semi-finals to the final.

During the qualification phase, the eighteen teams compete twice according to a randomly fired calendar.
The teams are divided into two new groups, the two best teams in each group are directly qualified for the final phase.
The ranking is established on the former points scale (2 -point victory, draw at 1, defeat at 0).
The final department is done according to the following criteria:

  • The number of points.
  • The difference in general goals.
  • The particular goal difference.
  • The number of goals scored outside.
  • The draw.

The qualification for the “Liguilla” and for the relegation dam is done through regional groups. The two best teams in each group are directly qualified for the final phase and the last two for the relegation dam.

The four qualified teams are distributed in the final table according to their general classification, the first facing the fourth and so on. The least well -ranked team welcomes in the first leg and the best in the return match.

In the event of equality on the sum of the two confrontations, extensions and then a penalty shootout take place.
