Max Richter (Hameln, March 22, 1966) is a British composer and musician, born in Germany.

Candidate, during his career, to 3 Grammy Award, including that of the best composer of the year in 2021 [first] , and winner of 2 BAFTA, is known above all for composing the soundtrack of the HBO TV series The brilliant friend It is Taboo , and for the modern variation of The four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. In December 2019, Richter passed a billion streams and one million sales of his albums. [3]

Born in Germany but always raised in Bedford (England), he studied piano at the University of Edinburgh, the prestigious Royal Academy in London and then in Florence, at the Italian Academy of Luciano Berio. [4] After finishing his studies, he founded the Piano Circus ensemble. [5]

For a few years he has been part of the ensemble, which has collaborated with artists such as Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe and Steve Reich and produced five albums.

In 1996 he collaborated with the Future Sound of London for their album Dead Cities . He later worked with the band for a period of about two years, also participating in the albums The Isness It is The Peppermint Tree and Seeds of Superconsciousness . In 2000 Richter worked with Roni Size and his reprazent for the album In the meeting .

In 2005 he produced the album Lookaftering di Vashti Bunyan E Nel 2008 Rocking House of Kelli Ali.

In 2002 he released his solo debut album: Memoryhouse , an experimental music record recorded with the BBC Philharmonic. [6]

In his second album The Blue Notebooks , published in 2004, Richter took inspiration from Notebooks in eighth by Franz Kafka and involved the actress Tilda Swinton, who reads some steps on the disc. [7]

In 2006 he released his third album, Songs from Before , which participated in Robert Wyatt and indirectly Haruki Murakami. [8]

The fourth album, 24 Postcards in Full Colour , is a collection of 24 mini-compliance released in 2008. In 2010 he distributed Infra , a 25 -minute composition performed by the floor, electronics and arches quintet written as an accompaniment for a choreography by Wayne McGregor. The Pitchfork portal, in reviewing the disc (vote 8.3/10), defined it as “painfully splendid”. [9]

In October 2012 he proposed live The four Seasons Originals of Antonio Vivaldi together with the Britten Sinfonia, then published on a disc.

His album Sleep , published in 2015, was considered the fortieth best ambient album ever by the Pitchfork website. [ten]

The soundtrack of Richter deserve separate discussion, written for both cinema and television. One of the most important is the soundtrack of the 2007 film Waltz with Bashir by Ari Folman (who earned him the European Film Award to the best soundtrack). He also wrote music for the independent movie Henry May Long (2008) and for The stranger (with Stéphane Moucha) Diretto da Feo Aladag.

In 2010 he participated in the soundtrack of the film Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese with On the Nature of Daylight and his remix [11] , also inserted in Arrival by Denis Villeneuve of 2016, as well as in Agnus dei (O The innocents ) by Anne Fontaine, always from 2016. He also wrote the soundtrack of Peter Richardson’s documentary How to Die in Oregon [twelfth] and of The unforgivable (O Unforgettable ) Di André Téchiné (2011). [13]

His song Sarajevo (adapted from Memoryhouse ) was inserted in Came to the world by Sergio Castellitto, in the international trailer of the films Prometheus by Ridley Scott (2012) and film Need for Speed by Scott Waugh (2014). The track November (also present in Memoryhouse ) is included in the film trailer To the Wonder by Terrence Malick e J. Edgar by Clint Eastwood. Two other films that include Richter songs are Perfect Sense di David Mackenzie [14] It is Sara’s key Di Gilles Paquet-Bornner. [15]

In 2012 he wrote music for the movies Lore Di Cate Shortland E Disconnect by Henry Alex Rubin. In 2013 he composed the music of the animated film The Congress The Irryn wasn’s burning man. [16]

In 2014 he is the author of the music of the HBO TV series The Leftovers – vanished into thin air . [17]

Since 2018 he has been the author of the music of the world -successful TV series, produced by Rai Fiction, HBO, Fandango and Tim Vision, The brilliant friend [18] , taken from the novel by Elena Ferrante, for which it was appointed, in the same year, to the Grammy Award.

In 2021 he was finally a candidate as “Best composer of the year”, always at the Grammy Award.

In 2010, Richter’s symphony The Anthropocene It was used in the experimental film experience of Darren Almond, in the gallery White Cube from London.

The composer also collaborated with the “Random International” digital art collective for two projects, contributing to the soundtracks of them, which were then set up at the Made in Berlin showroom [19] , at the Barbican Center in London and the prestigious Moma in New York [20] . [21]

Today Max Richter lives in the United Kingdom, in Oxfordshire County, with his partner Yulia Mahr (with whom he cannot have children), 2 Labradors named Haku and Evie, and a cat called Kiki. [22]

Previously Max and Yulia also lived in Edinburgh and Berlin, in the beautiful neighborhood of Kreuzberg.
