The Carolina and North-Western Railway (Car & NW) is an old American class I railway which served South Carolina and North Carolina; He appeared at the end of XIX It is century and ended up being absorbed by the Southern Railway just before the start of the Second World War.

The origins of this company go back to the Kings Mountain Railroad which connected Chester, South Carolina to York, South Carolina before the Civil War [ first ] . Kings Mountain Railroad began in 1855, but was destroyed by the Union army during clashes against the Army of Confederate States. The line was not rebuilt after the conflict [ 2 ] .

The layout was abandoned for almost 8 years, until the creation of the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1873 [ 3 ] . In the space of a decade, the Chester & Lenoir extended the line to Lenoir, Caroline du Nord. With more than 193 km , Chester & Lenoir was the longest narrow track railway from the two Carolines [ first ] .

During the decades that followed, the Chester & Lenoir worked under the aegis of the Richmond and Danville Railroad [ first ] .
When the Richmond & Danville was reorganized in Southern Railway in 1894, the Chester & Lenoir returned to its independence but for a short time. In 1896, he was put under receivers, and the following year he was reorganized under the name of Carolina & North Western Railway [ 4 ] . Although technically controlled by Southern, this small regional carrier, more than any other within the Southern Railway family, was authorized to operate practically independently [ first ] .

In 1902, Carolina & North Western Railway was converted to the standard spacing, and it took majority shares in a forest rail, Caldwell & Northern, which linked Lenoir to Colletsville, North Carolina [ first ] . In 1906, the Car & NW line reached almost 241 km , thanks to its extension to Edgemont, North Carolina; It facilitated access to forest operations, located in the mountains north and west of Hickory, North Caroline [ 5 ] . The line started from Chestnut Knot then went up the Upper Creek almost to its source; Then she went to the Linville Gorge region [ 6 ] .

In 1912, new workshops were built in Hickory, and in the space of 10 years, they produced a locomotive [ first ] .
A large flood, which took place in this region in 1916, damaged a lot of track and swept the entire city of Mortimer (located southeast of Edgemont). Many forest companies chose to abandon the region since most of the woods had been killed. The Car & NW found itself without important customers. Forest operations ended up definitively stopping in 1925 [ 6 ] .
At the same period, the model t built on a large scale by Ford, became more and more popular, so that the Car & NW traveler service began to tumble. In , the company filed a request to the Interstate Commerce Commission to abandon its traveler service between Lenoir and Edgemont. On this same journey, the commodity service was ensured for almost a year, but ended up being also abandoned in 1938 [ 6 ] .

During the 1920s and 1930s, the company received the nickname “Can’t & Never Will” due to these many extensions that never saw the light of day [ 6 ] .

The company had bankruptcy in 1938. The line continued its operations between Lenoir and Hickory, thanks to its acquisition by the Southern Railway in 1940 [ 4 ] .

The traveler service was removed in 1947. As early as 1948, the company completely abandoned steam for the benefit of the diesel engine. Carolina & North-Western was one of the very first railway companies entirely diissalized in the Southeast [ first ] .
When the Southern Railway reorganized in , he attributed the exploitation of the Yadkin Railroad to his division Carolina and North-Western [ 6 ] .
