Brian Ernest Orser , OC (Belville, 18 December 1961), is a Canadian skater.
He was the winner of the silver medal at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, world champion in 1987 and eight times Canadian national champion (from 1981 to 1988).
In 1988 he retired from the races and skated for almost twenty years in Stars on Ice. As a coach, he led both the South Korean Yuna Kim and the Japanese Yuzuru Hanyū to win Olympic gold, respectively in 2010 the first and 2014 and 2018 the second. He is also coach of the world champion Javier Fernandez Lopez. He is coach at Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club, in Canada.

Brian Orser was born in Belville, in Ontario, and grew up in Penettanguishene. [first]

Orser won his first national title in the Junior category in 1977. The following season participated in the Juniores World Cup, ranking fourth behind his rival Brian Boitano. In 1979 he conquered a second national title at the Junior level.

In 1980 he went to the Senior category. At its first international race, the Vienna Cup, won the bronze, then placing fourth at the Canadian skating championships. This was the last time in this competition was out of the podium.

In the 1980-1981 season, which followed the Olympics, Orser won the silver at the Nebelhorn Trophy, he placed sixth in Skate Canada International, and then won the first of the eight national titles they would follow. In his debut at the World Cup he placed sixth. The following season, he won his first medal in Skate Canada and the World Cup obtained fourth place. He will improve this position in 1983, with a bronze that will offer him a good position in preparation for the Olympic season.

Already when he still competed in the junior category, Orser had been the second man to land a triple Axel, who at the time only a few skaters had tried. [2] In the following years, the Canadian landed this leap more and more frequently and with much more ease than the other skaters. Thus, at the Olympics not only obtained the silver medal behind Scott Hamilton, but he was also the first man to land a triple Axel in an Olympic competition. Behind Hamilton he won the silver at the 1984 World Cup.

In the 1984-1985 season, after the retirement of the historic rival Brian Boitano, Brian could have been an undisputed champion, but because of some imperfections at the World Cup he only placed himself second, behind the Russian Alexander Fadeev. After this race, then, to accumulate advantage over Fadeev, Orser began working on the addition of a second triple Axel in his program: at the 1987 World Cup, he became the first skater to land two triple Axel in a free program and three in one Competition only. [3] He won this competition.

At the 1988 Olympics, Orser won a second silver medal, exceeded only by rival Brian Boitano.

He won silver again at the 1988 World Cup, thanks in particular to a good free.
From this season onwards, Orser has left competitions.

After retiring from competitions, Orser skated on Stars on Ice tours for almost twenty years until 2007.

Orser is openly gay. He was forced to declare his homosexuality in November 1998 due to a legal battle against one of his ex-partners. [24] Initially, Orser feared that this would ruin his career, [25] But since then he has obtained the support of both the public and other skaters. Since 2008 he has a relationship with Rajesh Tiwari, director of the Brian Orser Foundation. [26]
