Alps ( Álpeis ) is a 2011 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
Set in Athens, the film follows a paramedian, a nurse, a gymnast and his coach who impersonate under compensation just deceased to help the joints to elaborate the mourning: he won the Osella prize for the best screenplay at the 68th International Exhibition D ‘Cinematographic Art of Venice. The film opens with the choreography of a gymnast, observed by what seems to be his coach. Once his steps concluded, he asks to perform something more pop, but the teacher does not agree, threatening it. Meanwhile, a young tennis player remains the victim of a tragic car accident and while he is transported to the hospital in ambulance, the nurse begins to ask them those that seem simple and harmless questions, thus shaking a relationship of knowledge that will continue until the girl’s death, The sole purpose of extrapolating information on personality, tastes and character. After the departure, the nurse will offer, under compensation, to impersonate the tennis player for parents destroyed by the pain they accept.
In the meantime, the Alps group is outlined, four people, the gymnast, the paramedical, the coach and the nurse, who propose themselves as surrogates of just deceased to lighten the pain of loved ones. The nurse, however, lies on the death of the tennis player, ensuring the group that will recover soon, since the role of the deceased young man should have gone to the gymnast. An overview of different situations is subsequently shown in which the members of the group interpret surrogates for various other people: an elderly blind lady, an Englishman who was probably widowed, and an elderly gentleman who would seem to be the father of the nurse.
One evening the nurse returns to the gym of the meetings and finds the gymnast who is getting hanged with training ropes, but finally managing to save her, consoling her saying that it would have been a real shame losing such a good gymnast. Subsequently, the nurse / tennis player holds for too long by the parents of the deceased thus losing one of the usual meetings of Alps, thus arousing the suspicions of the rescuer / Mont Bianco who discovers a little later than the lies of the nurse, brutally chasing her out of the group.
The nurse, now destroyed, and unable to recognize the parties interpreted by real life, tries to seduce their father and then returns to the tennis player’s house, where he is chased by his parents now tired of the presence of this stranger who represents only a mere surrogate of the their daughter. The film ends with the same choreography as the gymnast, this time with pop music background, who finally manages to take all the steps to perfection, after which he thanks the teacher by telling him that he is the best in the world, with an almost detached tone, thus leaving the Doubt that she too has played a surrogate for the coach all this time.
The film was previewed on 3 September 2011 in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. [first] It was distributed in Greek cinemas by Feelgood Entertainment starting from October 27 of the same year. [2]
In Italy the film was distributed in theaters by Phoenix International Film on December 28, 2016, more than 5 years after its release. [3] He also had a second distribution in Italian cinemas on 17 September 2020, shortly after the release of Italy Dogtooth Lanthimos himself, distributed by Lucky Red. [4]
