Gaston Méry , born in 1866 and died in 1909, is an essayist, pamphleteer and far -right French journalist. Anti -Semitic and antimeridionalist, disciple of Édouard Drumont [ first ] , Gaston Méry is the editor -in -chief of the anti -Semitic newspaper Free Word [ 2 ] . He popularizes the use of the term “racism” in his novel Jean Revolt .

Born in Sens, April 20, 1886 [ 3 ] , of Amédée Méry, merchant Mercier, he did classic studies there at the College de Sens. After his military service, he delayed his law studies, because of the ruin of his parents [ 4 ] . While occupying the functions of Master Repetor at the Monge School in Paris, he followed the courses of the Faculty of Law, where he was received dismissed in 1889. He then worked for public assistance before resigning on April 20, 1892 , having been appointed editor at the Free speech , the same day of his foundation by Édouard Drumont.

As a journalist, his work is controversial and earned him several legal proceedings and duels, in particular with Laffon. In Free Word , he defended Jean-Baptiste Bidegain, media attacked during the files of the files. His review, The echo of the wonderful , founded in 1897, seeks to collect facts which would have made it possible to establish spiritualism and the supernatural on a rational basis. She also often seeks to prove by facts the truth of Catholic dogmas and devotes, for example, several issues to authenticate the Marian appearances of Marie Martel in Tilly-sur-Seulles [ 5 ] .

In 1900, he was elected on an anti -Semitic program, as a representative of the Faubourg Montmartre, at the Municipal Council of Paris, where he signed until 1909.

Gaston Méry died on July 15, 1909, after suffering from fatal phlebitis for three months [ 6 ] .

In his novel Jean Revolt, Released in 1892, Méry developed a certain idea of ​​what he called “racism”, at the time a neologism. In their conception of the race, the French anti -Semites then asked the question their own racial identity. Méry responds by claiming belonging to a so-called “Celtic race” and, in fact will oppose, to the southern that he identifies with a “Latin race [ 7 ] ». It is therefore the will to reconnect with the roots of this “Celtic race” that Méry calls “racism”.

This vision will inspire other racialist theories, including those of Maurice Barrès and Serge Sculfort de Beaurepas.
