The Rue Talaat Harb (Arab: Talaat Harb Street ) is one of the main traders in downtown Cairo, Egypt. Connecting Place Tahrir instead Ahmed Orabi, it is lined with buildings inspired by European architecture. Talaat Harb Street is made up of two segments revolving around a circular square, Place Talaat Harb.

This large rectilinear artery comes from the Cairo modernization campaign wanted by the Khedive Ismaïl Pacha, which has a “European city” built alongside the “Arab city”. The streets, straight and airy, are bordered by modern buildings, which contrast with the picturesque and tortuous alleys of the historic center. Talaat Harb Street, originally baptized on rue Soliman Pacha (it loses this name in 1954 for the benefit of that of Talaat Harb, famous economist) is at the start of XX It is century one of the upscale places in the capital, where luxuries and fashionable cafes are concentrated. The GROPPI tea room [ first ] , [ 2 ] , [ 3 ] , [ 4 ] , opened in 1925 [ 5 ] , was frequented at that time by the great Egyptian bourgeoisie and by the rich expatriates. Long supplier of the Egyptian royal family, he has a gingerness past an orientalizing decor and large mosaics [ 6 ] .

Another emblematic building of this time, the metro cinema, in art deco style, was built in the late 1930s. It was then one of the headlights in the neighborhood, as well as the Ritz Bar, installed in a adjoining building. Other famous buildings, the Savoy hotel, inaugurated in 1898, and the Abdel Kader Pacha and Mohamed Sabet Pacha palaces. Rue Soliman Pacha also housed several “clubs” which welcomed, in the English way, the people of “good society”. Finally, it was a long time one of the centers of the Jewish community in Cairo, as the monumental synagogue Cha’ar Hachamaïm still attests today.

Many buildings testify to the vogue for European architecture at the end of the 19th century It is and at the beginning of XX It is century. Number of buildings are inspired by Renaissance, Baroque, Classic styles (or even a mixture of the three), sometimes with more or less assertive orientalist touches: ancient and cherubs columns, foliage and ironwork gates thus close with the croissants, the arabesques, scarabs or sphinxes, according to the fantasies of architects who participated in the project [ 7 ] .

Talaat Harb Street is today a frequented artery, in contact with Place Tahrir, a nerve center in the neighborhood. Luxury shops (fashion shops, fine grocery stores) are neighboring with offices and neighborhood bazaars. In the center of the square, a statue of Talaat Harb talks about his memory. Due to its proximity to Tahrir Square, Talaat Harb Street is sometimes the framework of public demonstrations, whether cultural or political. This was in particular the case in 2005, when the Kifaya opposition movement (“enough!” In Arabic) organized a march against the policy of President Hosni Mubarak [ 8 ] , or in 2011, during unprecedented demonstrations against the regime in place [ 9 ] .
