Agent 007 – Thunderball (Thunder operation) ( Thunderball ) is a 1965 film by Terence Young.

It is the fourth film of James Bond’s official series. The work, as well as Ian Fleming’s novel Thunder operation ( Thunderball ) of 1961 on which it is based largely, is taken from an original subject that Fleming had written with Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham.

James Bond participates in the funeral of Colonel Jacques Bouvar, number six of the Spectre and author of the murder of two ME6 agents; 007, however, he knows that it is a frame and that Bouvar is still alive: chasing the criminal to his castle, Bond faces him and kills him, then fleeing with the help of the French agent Madame the doors.

In a Specter meeting in Paris, chaired by the enigmatic number one, the number two of Emilio Largo presents the latest project of the criminal organization: diverting two atomic bombs and keep the NATO in hand to ask for a redemption.

The plan begins in the Sanatorio di Shrublands, located near a NATO aerial base; By coincidence, Bond is also found in the clinic, to improve his health and notes that another patient, Lippe, has a Tong tattoo. Bond therefore looks for Lippe’s room but is noticed by the man of the adjoining room, whose head is surrounded by bandages. Lippe tries to kill Bond with a spinal traction machine, but the agent is saved by his physiotherapist Patricia Fearing.

Lippe and Angelo Palazzi, the blindfolded man, are part of the Specter plan: the latter’s face has in fact been surgically modified to look like the French Air Force François Derval Air Force, which is staying at the base of Shrublands.
Derval must participate in a training mission aboard a RAF strategic bomber -vulcan bomber loaded with two atomic bombs. Angelo then kills Derval to take his place but, when he was paid by the Spectre Fiona Volpe agent (Francis Walker in the Italian adaptation), asks for a figure higher than the agreed one.

The next morning Angelo takes the place of Derval on the flight and kills the rest of the crew with the gas, then flies with the Vulcan to the Bahamas making him land in shallow waters near the Largo ship, the Flying disc .
The Specter divers of the Specter, commanded by Largo, recover the atomic bombs while Angelo, trapped on his seat, is left to drown by Largo after the latter has cut the air breathing pipe.

In the meantime, Bond has discovered Derval’s corpse in the clinic; On the highway for London Lippe attacks Bond, but a masked motorcyclist kills him with a rocket grenade and runs away. At the time of abandoning the bike the pilot, taking off the helmet, proves to be Fiona who has eliminated Lippe, guilty of having hired the greedy angel, on Blofeld’s order.

At an Mi6 conference in London all 00 agents are informed that the Spectre has requested one hundred million pounds in exchange for bombs and threatens to destroy a large city in the United States or in the United Kingdom if the redemption is not paid.
During the Bond meeting he recognizes Derval’s photography and therefore asks M to send him to Nassau to contact Derval’s sister, Domino.

Leaving the sea after an immersion, Bond meets Domino and later he finds her in a casino together with Largo, of which he is a lover. Bond tackles wide in a game of cards, winning, and subsequently invites Domino to dance.
Bond then meets Felix Leiter and Q; immersing itself under the Flying disc , Bond cannot find atomic bombs but notes that the yacht is equipped with an underwater hat and escapes the wide men for a whisker.

The next day Bond is a broad visit to his estate, Palmyra; The collaborator of Bond, Paula Caplan, is brought by force to Palmyra but commit suicide with a capsule of cyanide rather than betray bond.

After spending the night with fox, Bond is kidnapped by her but runs away by taking advantage of a celebration of Junkanoo in the Kiss Kiss club, where the woman accidentally killed by her own bodyguard.
Bond and Felix then look for the volcan finding it underwater hidden by a camouflage network.
Bond then reveals to Domino that Largo killed his brother and asks her for help to find the bombs, but, during research, Domino is captured and tortured by Largo.
In the meantime, Bond pretends to be a wide man and discovers his plan, that is, destroying Miami; Discovered and trapped by Largo, 007 is saved by Leiter and warns the authorities.
The divers of the United States Navy are paratrooping in the area and Bond joins them: after a underwater clash, the men of Largo surrender while the criminal escapes the Flying disc with one of the bombs on board.
Bond manages to climb the piloting cabin, where he faces Largo and two of his while trying to take control of the boat.
Meanwhile, the nuclear physicist assumed by Largo, Kutze, rebels and free domino; Largo is about to shoot Bond when Domino kills him with a diving rifle. Domino, Bond and Kutze are able to throw themselves into the sea before the ship takes and explodes. Then, a CIA plane brings them to safe.

He should have been the first of the series already in 1962, but in those years an aspra legal battle was underway with Kevin McClory, a conscnector of the original subject from which Fleming had taken his novel of the same name. So Saltzman and Broccoli decided to make his debut with Licence to kill . However McClory after almost 20 years managed to bring the novel that had written to four hands with Fleming on the screen and so in 1983 a remake of Thunderball , entitled More direct With ironic reference, in the title, on the return of Sean Connery who, in 1972, said that James Bond would never play again.

A problem was given by the fact that 25% of the filming should have been underwater and, for this purpose, Ricoou Browning was asked, which had played the underwater parts of the creature subject of the film The monster of the black lagoon ; Browning will then be recalled by Kevin McClory for the filming of More direct . The prologue was to be set in Hong Kong, but the imminent before Goldfinger mission In Paris he convinced the production to look for a location near the French capital, in the Castle of Anet, the starting point of the shooting, which took place on February 16, 1965. [first]

The song of the titles is composed of John Barry and Leslie Bricusse sung by the Welsh singer Tom Jones.

It was chosen shortly before the release of the film to replace another song, Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang , who was sung by Shirley Bassey. Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were worried that a song that did not have the name of the film in his text did not work well and commissioned a different one; [2] However, throughout the film the notes of the musical themes remained the original ones of Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang , moreover, one of the scenes of the film takes place in a room called Club Kiss Kiss . Johnny Cash also proposed his version for the film, always with the title Thunderball , but it was discarded by the production also for its country veil, not relating to the context of the film. [3]

The complete original soundtrack was distributed at least thirty years after the release of the film, as at the time of the first distribution John Barry had not yet finished recording the second half of the film. [4]
