Alexandre abd-wel-nor (or Iskender Abd-el-Nour), born on in Damascus (Ottoman Empire) and died on In Bazeilles (Ardennes), is a French local doctor and politician.

Son of Gabriel Ab-El-Nour, from an old Christian family from Damascus, he studied medicine in Constantinople, then in Paris. He marries Marguerite Louise watch, the in Raucourt-et-Flaba (Ardennes) [ first ] .

He exercised three years in Paris in the services of Jules-Émile Péan then accepted in 1899 a doctor’s position at the Flamanville Hospice in Bazeilles, near Sedan.

When the war of 1914-1918 broke out, the Ardennes were quickly invaded. He continues to exercise until the end at Sedan hospital, to treat the injured who are brought there, and was taken prisoner with seven other doctors and three pharmacists. He is released according to the Geneva conventions. He returns to service as a doctor-commander of 4 It is dragons regiment [ 5 ] , and participates in particular in the fights of Mont Kemmel.

After the First World War, he resumed his medical activity, and participated in various international congresses, in particular in the congresses of the International Society of Surgery (International Society of Surgery).

The politician and the local elected official [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Municipal councilor in 1902, he became mayor of Bazeilles in 1912, first mayor of non-European origin in mainland France [ 6 ] , [ 7 ] , and stayed in this position until 1945 [ 6 ] . Humor playing his difference (like Kofi Yamgnane a few decades later in Brittany), he is indignant to be the Turkish head of his political opponents [ 8 ] .

During this mandate of mayor, he contributed to the improvement of living conditions in Bazeilles and notably created in 1913 the electrical union. In the aftermath of the First World War, he featured the raising of the city and also founded the Cooperative for the reconstruction of the Sedanais [ 9 ] . The following decades, he endowed bazeilles with cheap housing using the financing possibilities introduced by the Loucheur law.

He is elected general councilor of the canton of Sedan-Sud [ ten ] , post he occupied from 1919 to 1937 [ first ] , [ 11 ] , [ twelfth ] . Classified among the independent radicals in 1937, he was beaten by the candidate Sfio, Eugène Derulle, with 2,101 votes against 2,264 votes [ 13 ] .

The climate of the 1930s is marked by the economic crisis. The themes of soil law, and the priority of work for the French meet a certain echo and find themselves in highlight or in filigree in many electoral speeches, on the right as on the left. In this context, Alexandre Abd-El-Nour is forced to remember that he is a veteran and that he has worked and invests in the Sedanais country for forty years [ 14 ] .

From 1935, he also chaired, for several years, the Sedan initiative union [ 15 ] .

The pioneer of the automobile and motorized sports [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Passionate about automotive and motorized sport, Alexandre Abd-El-Nour is one of the first to have a car in the Ardennes (driving license n ° 4) [ 16 ] . He created the Automobile-Club Ardennais in 1901 and became the president-dean of the Automobile Clubs of France [ first ] . The Automobile-Club Ardennais review promotes safety rules, the evolution of road infrastructure and road signaling, but also tourism, history and culture in Ardennes. This review publishes for example articles by the historian Henri Manceau and, in 1954, it also relays the promotion on a show by the Company of Little Comedians of Clouds, led by a certain Jacques Félix. The success of this show will lead a few years later to the creation of the World Festival of Puppets Theaters, in Charleville-Mézières. In 1954 again, Alexandre Abd-El-Nour opened the first road safety center in the Ardennes.

In 1923 he became the first president of the Ardennes aero-club, created the of this year 1923 [ 2 ] and the rest until 1937. As such, he fell to the preparation of the inauguration of the Charleville-Mézières-Belval aerodrome in 1924. He is also among the members of the Aero-Club His old friend Roger Sommer, one of the pioneers of the velocipede, of the automobile and then aviation in France, for whom he had served as a track commissioner during his tests on the aerodrome of Sedan – Douzy.

His career will earn him raised to the rank of officer of the Legion of Honor [ 17 ] . It was also decorated with the 1914-1918 war cross (France).
