They are responsible for the maintenance of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, but are often engaged in wars abroad as well as in humanitarian and rescue operations to the victims at the national level. Heirs of the Liberation Army of Korea, the South Korean armed forces were created in 1948 following the partition of Korea from a gendarmerie force of 25,000 men created by the military government of the army army United States in Korea. Supported by the United States, they actively participated in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953 against the communist powers (USSR, China and North Korea) as part of the Cold War. More than 325,000 men were also deployed in the South Vi\u00eat Nam during the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1973 in order to fight against Viet Cong. The South Korean army is divided into 4 branches, the commanders of which constitute the committee of joint staff chiefs: In the 2010s, these are one of the most important armies in the world in terms of workforce, they are nevertheless decreasing: 655,000 active staff and 4,500,000 reservists, or potential 5,155,000 soldiers in 2013 [ 6 ] .
