The theater was founded in May 1920, by decree of the government of the RSS of Azerbaijan. The theater is established in the building, built in 1910-1911 (architect N. Babayev). In 1910, the Ma\u00eflov brothers had the idea of \u200b\u200bbuilding on their own land the new building for the theater, large and equipped in a modern way.The theater hall can accommodate 1281 spectators. In the theater are staged dramatic shows, ballet, opera, operetta in Azerbaijani and Russian [ first ] . During the first years, on the stage of the theater were presented the ballets Swan Lake , Giselle , Capp\u00e9lia and operas Leylli and Chad Mannoun D’Uzeyir Hajibeyov, Chaah isma\u00efl of Mouslim Magoma\u00efev, Achoug Garib of Zulfugar Hadjibeyov, The demon , Mazeppa , Eug\u00e8ne On\u00e9guine , Prince Igor , A\u00efda , Faust , Carmen , Tosca . In the season of 1924 – 1925, the Ballet and Opera troupe was brought together in an isolated collective, with the best masters of the Azerbaijani musical theater: Bul -Bul, Huseyngulu Sarabski, Huseyyyyn Hadjibababeyov, M.T.baghirov, h\u0259n\u0259n \u0259 Mammadova, Sevil Hadjiyeva, Fatma Mukhtarova, Hagigat Rzayeva [ 2 ] . During the 1924-1925 season, the operas Leylli and Chad Mannoun d’Uzeyir Hajibeyov, et Chaah isma\u00efl by Muslim Magomayev are represented.In 1925, spectators can attend Archin Mal-alan , Achug Garib , in 1929 at Chaah isma\u00efl . In 1930, the theater received the name of Mirza Fatali Akhundov [ first ] . In 1938, the theater was decorated with the order of Lenin [ 3 ] . In 1940, The Tower of the Virgin by A. Badalbeyli, the first Azerbaijani ballet, is staged [ 3 ] . The composer Ta\u011f\u0131zad\u0259-Hac\u0131b\u0259yov niazi z\u00fclf\u00fcqar o\u011flu brings his contribution to the theater.In 1937-1948, he was the conductor, in 1951-1952 and 1958-1959, main conductor, and in 1961-1965, its artistic director.
