The Camping Base Camping Refuge It is a hiking and camping refuge in the municipality of Acceglio, in the upper Valle Maira.

Obtained from the renovation of pre -existing military barracks, it was inaugurated in 1982. In the course of 2010, after a few years of inactivity, the management was acquired by the company Maira S.p.A., controlled by the Mountain Community Valle Maira, which specifically established a purpose company ( Campo Base s.r.l.) for the management of the refuge.

It is located in the hamlet of Chiappera, in the municipality of Acceglio, at the end of the road of Fondovalle della Valle Maira. Being reached by a carriage road, pursuant to current Piedmontese legislation is classified as a hiking refuge. [first]

It consists of two low structures flanked, one in ordinary masonry, the other in stone masonry. It has 32 beds in the refuge, in 4 and 8 -seater rooms with bunk beds as well as two bedrooms with private bathroom; It also has an internal running water, electrical system, internal toilets, heating, public telephone. It offers catering, bar and hotel service. In addition, the land surrounding the refuge is used as a campsite, with 27 pitches for caravans and campers and 15 curtain seats. The refuge has an internal drug dealing to which the guests of the campsite can be supported. [2]

It remains open for ten months a year, closing for a period between the end of October and the Christmas holidays. [2]

The objective of the refuge is also supporting the activity in the upper valley of a “mountain school”, oriented to the offer of training programs not only for the learning of sports disciplines – mountaineering, ski mountaineering, cross -country skiing, snowshoes, hiking , hiking cycle, sport fishing – but also for an education for life, coexistence, technical -scientific and humanistic culture, to mountain safety. It can be reached by car following the Statale of Fondovalle della Valle Maira. Once in Acceglio, continue following the signs for Butt ; After the fraction, continue for about 1 km, until the end of the asphalted road. [4]

Due to its position, the refuge can serve as a starting point and/or support for different ascents throughout the upper Valle Maira.

In the immediate vicinity of the refuge stands the Provencal Rocca, with its numerous routes of rock.

On the southern side of the valley they can be reached: Rocca Bianca, Monte Sautron, Rocca Blancia, Monte Baueria, Brec de Chamberyron, Tête de la Frema, Tête de l’homme, Monte Vallonasso, Monte Viraysse, Monte Soubyran.

On the northern side, you can reach: Monte Cervet, Monte Booliagna, Monte Freide, Monte Alrage, Monte Bellino, Monte Faraut, Buc Faraut, Monte Maniglia.

Finally, on the watershed with France at the head of the valley you can reach the Tête de Cialancion and the Tête du vallonet.

It is the stop point of the Via Alpina, finding himself at the intersection of two of his paths. During the winter season, the refuge acts as a support point for the upper ring of the Prazzo base ski slope – Acceglio – Saretto – Chiappera and for the ski mountaineering excursions in the upper Valle Maira. Starting from the 2010-2011 season, it is the Base Srl Campo to manage the 25 km of the Nordic ski slopes of the Acceglio and Prazzo area.

In summer, it can be a good starting point for demanding mountain bike excursions to Mount Bellino, Colle Maurin, Colle Ciarbonet, the Passo della Cavallo, the Colle delle Munie.
