The Bellegarde station [ 5 ] is a French train station of Lyon-Perrache lines in Geneva (border) and Bourg-en-Bresse in Bellegarde, located on the territory of the new town of Valserhône and more precisely in the delegated commune of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, in the department of Ain.

It is a station of the National Society of French Railways (SNCF), served by TGVs and Ter Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Léman Express trains. It welcomes around 750,000 travelers per year, 500,000 of which on the TER network borrowed in particular by cross -border workers working in the vicinity of Geneva in Switzerland.

The first passenger building was opened in 1858 to allow a stop on the line which links Seyssel in Geneva. But a fire reduced the wooden building to nothing and required the construction of a new building in 1907. Over the years, other lines were grafted at the station and allowed it to develop by welcoming in particular The TGV in 1981 on its connection between Paris and Geneva. From a simple railway station, the site underwent a large restructuring in 2010 to become a multimodal pole [ 6 ] , that is to say combining several modes of transport. The second passenger building at Bellegarde station was built in 1907 [ 22 ] over there Paris Railway Company in Lyon and the Mediterranean . This chalet -style building has a two -level 2 -level main line, flanked by several extensions. The first damaged passenger building project is to transform it into a community hotel in the community of municipalities in the Bellegardian country [ 23 ] . The building restructuring project was established by Jean-Pierre Baillet, architect based in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine.

However, this project does not succeed and the city of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine then buys the building and decides to install its cultural pole “The Passerelle des Arts” bringing together the library-media library and the music school. The opening of this structure is effective in .

The new passenger building was built in 2009 following the project to restructure the Bourg-en-Bresse line in Bellegarde. Arep, a SNCF subsidiary, designs the building with the aim of minimal energy consumption [ 24 ] . It presents itself with a dome -shaped roof made up of two envelopes superimposed and allowing imprisonment of an air blade playing a role of thermal regulator. It is inaugurated on and open to the public the next day [ 25 ] .
This building is located more withdrawn from the city center because it takes place on the other side of the Lyon – Geneva lines. The services it includes are those previously offered by the old installations with the exception of the cafeteria-restaurant. Now, you can find in the circular hall of the station: a space for reception and sale of SNCF tickets, public sanitary facilities, a Relay tobacco-press which also offers food to take away and a space of consumption on site. The passenger building is located below the Lyon-Geneva and Bourg-en-Bresse lines in Bellegarde. To allow access to disabled people, the station has several elevators.

Ways and quays [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Bellegarde station has a large number of tracks, a large part of which were devolved to the sorting station, disused today.

The station has five stopways for trains circulating on the classic Lyon-Genève line as well as two lanes for the rehabilitated line for TGV use. It included a disused machine delivery which was demolished to allow the passage of the new so -called carpatian path. Finally, there are a dozen stopways that allow the unloading of machines as well as a special route leading household waste to the Sidefage reprocessing plant in Arlod.

In the direction of Culoz, the track cuts the D101F on the Pont des Lades then the rue du Rhône on a level crossing, at the exit of the hamlet of Arlod. It remains to be remembered that the track is at speed TER on the whole of the Bourg-en-Bresse-Geneva and Lyon-Geneva section. In the direction of Geneva, the track cuts the D1084 then spans the Valserine before passing on the heights of the hamlet of Coucy and entering the Tunnel of the creed which crosses the Sorgia and Crêt d’eau massif. At the end of this tunnel, the way offers two directions: Évian-les-Bains or Geneva.

Until 2010, there are three platforms: the first hosts the G route as well as all the services: station manager, waiting room and buffet-restaurant. The Quai number 2 hosts the C and F tracks and the Quai number 3 the auctions A and B. Each quay measures 400 m Except the quay n O 1 that is 410 m To allow access to double-TGVs.

An aerial gateway allows you to cross all the tracks on both sides of the station and an underground passage to link the quays between them and the exit, located at Place Charles-de-Gaulle, also called Place de la Gare. At the end of the 2000s, Bellegarde station underwent work. Two lanes are built along the D1084 to allow the bifurcation of the TGV of Paris in Geneva without turning back in the current station, which made it a station with an intersection in the form of Y. These two lanes are linked to a quay, The Quai number 1. This modern quay is located on a viaduct towards Geneva and on land near the Lancrans bridge in the direction of Bourg-en-Bresse. The quays were renamed: the 1 became the 4, the 2, which became the 3 and the 3 which became the 2. To connect them, a new underground passage has been dug from the dome, center of the multimodal pole. Former quay number 3 has undergone work on half to enhance it to allow access to the Geneva-Marseille and Geneva-Montpellier TGV, the station not until then upon standards.

Relations with Switzerland [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Bellegarde station is one of the poles of RER Léman Express whose CEVA is the main link [ 26 ] . The plans included re-electrification of the Geneva-Bellegarde line in 25 kV and a served service between these two cities [ 27 ] .

This re-electrification has been completed since 2014 with the creation of a separation section 1,500 Volts Continuous/25 KV Alternative 50 Hz South of the station, at the arlod level, only bi-current machines can now access Bellegarde, as well as TGV Polytension (Lyria) and possibly the Rae Rae 1051 of the Swiss Association Tee Classic (Quadrity Ramed equipped with the KVB since 1995, authorized to circulate on the RFF network).

The multimodal pole project [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

A multimodal pole is the meeting place for several modes of transport. The first objective of the restructuring of the Bellegarde station is to promote connections between regional trains (TER), national trains (TGV), road modes (urban and interurban bus, private vehicles, taxis) and pedestrians.

The multimodal pole project in Bellegarde comes from two reasons: the first is the desire to reduce the journey time between Paris and Geneva, the second is that the passenger building is completely ravaged by the fire of the .

In the 1990s, the Swiss Confederation as well as the Rhône-Alpes region were in favor of a rapprochement between the French capital and the North Alpine regions as well as the east of Switzerland by the Paris-Geneva rail link. Feasibility studies for the construction of a new LGV, baptized “LGV des Titans” which can link Mâcon to Geneva along the A40 motorway have been diligent [ 28 ] . But this project was abandoned in 1997 [ 29 ] Because of an estimated cost of realization too high. Another project, less expensive, consists in the rehabilitation and modernization of the old line of carpathians, an itinerary which would shorten 47 kilometers the distance between Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and Bourg-en-Bresse compared to the route Borrowed by the TGV passing through the municipalities of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and Culoz. This project is definitively adopted after the publication of a decree [ 30 ] declaring “of public and urgent utility the work necessary for the modernization and electrification of the rail line of Bourg-en-Bresse in Bellegarde-sur-Valserine [ note 1 ] ». The Bellegarde station is therefore on the new line of the TGV line. Track repair and connection to the existing network requires major work in the sector. The construction of the multimodal pole is definitively adopted [ 14 ] Following the fire of . It is then absolutely necessary and urgent to take measures to renovate or rebuild the passenger building which is located in provisional premises of the “Algeco” type on Place Charles-de-Gaulle.

The station has been completely redesigned. A new traveler building, in the shape of a translucent dome, was built on the banks of rue de la Caserne. This building aims to be innovative in terms of energy savings and sustainable development [ 24 ] : The dome is made with a double layer of translucent material which allows air to circulate, the air is therefore isolates the building by bringing heat in winter and freshness in summer. This building welcomes various travelers: counters, offices and shops. Unlike the old passenger building, this new building is adapted to the circulation of people with reduced mobility and people with luggage, which means that these passengers will no longer be forced to wear their suitcases or cross in the same way ways, as before. A new TGV quay has been built on a viaduct above the same street. This quay almost extends to the entrance to the Musinens tunnel, on the edge of the RD1084.

These works also allow the City of Bellegarde to improve the parking possibilities in the city and on the outskirts of the new station. To justify the terms of multimodality, the city must improve its parking lot, mainly intended for border workers working in Geneva. For commercial commissioning, in the middle of 2010, two parking lots combined in total 215 places are built [ thirty first ] . The city also had a study of parking in its enclosure. If the need is really existing, 150 additional places could be fitted out near the multimodal pole.

The lines that converge in Bellegarde [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Bellegarde station represents the meeting point of several lines. Historically, since 1858 [ 11 ] , the first line is that connecting Lyon to Geneva by Ambérieu-en-Bugey and Culoz. She arrives at Bellegarde station by Arlod and the Crédo tunnel from Geneva. At the end of the 19th century, three other lines grafted at the station, the Longeray-Léaz line at the Bouveret at the exit of the Crédo tunnel in 1880, then the Haut-Bugey line in 1882 [ 2 ] and the line of Collonges-Fort-l’Ecluse in Divonne-les-Bains (border) which serves the country of Gex in 1899 [ 32 ] . But the latter is now closed at the service of travelers.

Desert [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The restructuring of the line does not allow, initially to circulate TER trains on the section La Cluse-Bellegarde [ 33 ] . But some additional adjustments, such as the renovation of the quays in the stations of the stretch considered would allow it to be done.

The station is the central point of the Mobi’Vals bus network serving Valserhône and is served by many regional lines: Cars Express Region X33 lines (Bellegarde – Divonne/Ferney serving the Pays de Gex) and X36 (Bellegarde – Nurieux TGV – Bourg), the Lines Cars Region Ain A33 (Bellegarde – Seyssel), A36 (Bellegarde – Challex), A53 (Bellegarde – Mijoux) and A60 (Gex – Bellegarde – Bourg) and the Cars Haute -Savoie Y22 line (Bellegarde -Annecy ).

This station is open to the freight service [ 35 ] (Massive train only).
