Calligra suite – Wikipedia

Calligra Suite (previously known until 2010 as KOffice ) ^[3] , is an Open Source Office Suite available for Windows, MacOS, Linux, FreeBSD and Haiku. ^[4] . and recently also for Android ^[5]

Contains a Word Processor (Words), a sheet of calculation or spreadsheet (tables) and a presentation program (internship). The basic calligra engine is used for both desktop (computer) and mobile applications (palming, smartphone, etc.).

KOffice It was a Suite of personal productivity software created for the KDE desktop environment, but made progressively available for other platforms starting from the Serie 2. The whole suite is open source, distributed under the LGPL GNU license. It is not included in the basic KDE package as follows an independent distribution cycle, but can be downloaded from the project website.

The transition to the new infrastructure offered by KDE 4 gave the developers the opportunity to proceed with a profound revision of the project both from a technical point of view and as regards the graphic interface.

The version of Koffice 2.3.3, distributed on June 24, 2011, is a version considered usable for daily work, but only for developers or non -professional users. It is still free of Kivio, which however returns to the suite with version 2.4.
Starting from version 1.5 allows the import of documents in formats different from their own, such as those of OpenOffice.org or Microsoft Office.
The project of the project works to improve the Suite series 2. This version uses the QT4 toolkit and is therefore also available for Microsoft Windows and MacOS systems. ^{[6] [7]}

From version 2.2 supports the formats of Microsoft Office 2007. Koffice supports the Openocument format.

Nokia created the documents viewer for its Maemo 5 (Freemantle) platform based on Koffice 2, and in particular Kword and KPRESenter to use Word Processor and presentations.
In 2010, the Koffice community decided to rename the suite Calligra Suite To reflect the presence of productivity products as well as applications for creativity.

Producing and using an office suite is an extremely difficult task, especially for a project like Koffice that can count on very limited financial and human resources. Koffice is also still incomplete (especially as regards its calculation sheet), immature and little used, making heavy changes necessary at the same time as the great port of porting on the QT4 bookstores.

The office suite sector is mainly occupied by two maximum weights :

It is assumed that the version of Koffice 2 will not have the same function of these two software suite for a long time. To find, however, its niche of users, the Koffice project has carried out the following strategy since 2005:

• Highlight the integration with your chosen environment of default, KDE, in which it cannot have competitors. As a real KDE application, all Koffice applications bring the following benefits to the KDE user: standardization of behaviors, menus, icons, quick choice keys; transparency to the network through KIO technology; Integration with other software including Konquoror thanks to KPARTS technology; Thanks to the fact of the reuse of the KDE bookstores.   Koffice is not like OpenOffice.org who almost completely supports Microsoft formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc.), and uses its own open file format. To break this isolation, Koffice thus adopted the Openocument format. It is the first suite, just before OpenOffice.org, to announce the support of this format (variable according to the components). Koffice (Calligra Suite) therefore has the same format as OpenOffice. Since all standards must have the aim of at least two distinct implementations, (two different suite), may take advantage of a possible success of OpenOffice.org (and therefore of the Openocument standard) also under the Microsoft Windows operating system;
• Innovate in the field of ergonomics. Less known than the two best known and most complete giants, Koffice will only find its space if it will simplify the life of its users, from simple activities to large documents. The following are not for now:

	Kiwi	A program for the design of block diagrams, with the possibility of expansion of the masks. Developed by Thekompany , this offers further masks for sale. Not available in Koffice 2.2.
	Kugar	Report generator. It was replaced by the Integrated Kexi report generator.
	Kcchart	Graphic generator. Available as an integrated functionality in all applications. From version 2.0 it is no longer available as a Stand Alone application, but only integrated to the other applications in the suite.
	Kfoula	An editor of mathematical formulas. It should return available starting from version 2.2 as an integrated functionality of the suite.

Calligra suite currently includes the following components:

Calligra is designed to work with the KDE platform, using KDE software bookcases and the framework, graphic bookcases, qt. However, it is distributed independently by the Desktop Environment KDE. All its components are available under free software licenses and with the use of Opensocument as a native file format whenever possible.

Calligra is undergoing a deep large revision for the use of flake and pigment, as far as possible within the applications. Its developers plan to share infrastructures as much as possible among applications to reduce bugs and improve user experience. ^[23] They also want to create an Openocument library for use in other KDE applications, which will allow developers to easily add the support for reading and output of the Openocument files to their applications. ^[24] The automation of the activities and the extension of the suite with personalized functionality can be done with D-Bus or with scripting languages ​​such as Python, Ruby, and Javascript. ^[25]

Nokia has developed a user interface for use on mobile Words devices, tables and internships. This version, which is called FreOffice , is available for Maemo and Meego operating systems. ^[26]
