Founded on 12 July 2012, the rivers and channels already controlled by the government agency British Waterways took control. The concept of a union to control British rivers was born already in the 1960s with Robert Aickman [first] , future co-founder of the Inland Waterways Association, to protect the future of British rivers and channels. The idea was resumed in 2008 with the British Waterways in response to the cuts of funding for subsidies, the drop in revenue after the 2007-2008 financial crisis and the growing requests from navigators to have control over rivers and channels. The elections were won by the Labor Party, who started working to transform the British Waterways into a private company.
