He was born in Vauquois in the Meuse. Located at the top of a mound at 25 km Northwest of Verdun, the site was the place of a long battle of the First World War, the Battle of Vauquois, which completely destroyed the village. Although placed in the red zone, the village will be rebuilt at the bottom of the mound in part thanks to the support of General Desprez who favored the sponsorship and the help of the city of Orleans [ first ] many of the mobilized had fought in Vauquois. He had a house built there, the second hard house rebuilt in Vauquois, in the early 1920s.
