In the summer of 2000 the new headquarters in via Riva di Reno was inaugurated in the former Tabacchi manufacture and on 28 June 2003 the two new rooms of Lumière cinema were opened in the renovated spaces of the Ex-Macello area (manufacturing of the arts) , where the Cinema Library Renzo Renzi and the non -filmic collections are also located, such as the photographic archive.

The film library retains and restores the cinematographic heritage to make it usable today and allow its future transmission. It is equipped with three archives: municipal warehouses (via dell’Industria), new technical archive (via Zanardi), Pianazze – “flammable” archive (Sasso Marconi).

Since March 2014 the president is the Italian director Marco Bellocchio [3] . The director is Gian Luca Farinelli [4] .

Among the various events and festivals organized by the Cineteca di Bologna there are: the found cinema, Italian visions and Human Rights Nights Film Festival.

The found cinema is a film review dedicated to the rediscovery of rare and little -known films, with particular reference to the film production of the origins.
It has been held since 1986, when he took the place of the Porretta Free Film Festival. The review presents a precious selection of rare or lost works, coming from the historical archives of the Cineteche in various countries.

The event takes place between June and July in some places in the historic center of Bologna, including Piazza Maggiore and the manufacture of the arts, also hosting the movie publishing market exhibition.

Artistic director of the Festival was the critic and historian of Finnish cinema Peter Von Bagh, who died in 2015. An important role in the Festival was that of Vittorio Martinelli, critic of silent cinema who died in 2008 [5] . Currently, the Festival’s board team is composed of Gian Luca Farinelli, Cecilia Cenciarelli, Ehsan Khoshbakht and Mariann Lewinsky.

It preserves over 80,000 cinematographic films, mainly in 35 mm and 16 mm, but also in super 8 and in other minor formats such as videodisks. The film library has become, thanks to its laboratory, the found image, a center recognized internationally in the field of conservation and cinematographic restoration [6] [7] . The Renzo Renzi library preserves about 47,000 volumes of cinematographic topic (including 2,500 photography books and 2,000 graphics and comic texts), as well as a collection of specialized periodicals (about 1,100 newspapers) and 40 archival funds of cinema cards. The bibliographic heritage is placed on an open shelf and is directly accessible to the public.

Among its equipment, the library acquired the personal archive of the research materials of Vittorio Martinelli (1926 – 2008), a cinematographic and historical critic of silent cinema, who had transferred him a few years before his death.

The videogame archive of the Cineteca di Bologna is a partner of G | A | M | E [13] , Italian scientific journal of Game Studies. In 2022 the Cineteca di Bologna Foundation donated the entire videogame archive to the Municipality, permanently hosted in the Salaborsa Lab Liber “Roberto Ruffilli”.

The film library has developed two projects with the aim of feeding the passion of young people for cinema. One of these is “screens and blackboards: a children’s cineclub” aimed at children between 6 and 18 years old.

In addition, the Cineteca has developed professional training paths accessible through calls. The courses are free but limited number, with a selection process. They are made with the contribution of the European Social Fund and the Emilia-Romagna Region. [14] [15]
