Endowed more efficient air detection for this purpose, they could play the role of “Piquet Radar” for the lighting of a naval force.

The Overcouf (D621) and 1970.

The armament of the “T 47” was versatile, both anti-ship, anti-aircraft and anti-sous-marine. They were designed to serve essentially as the escort of a naval force including an aircraft carrier, hence this new name of squadron escort more in accordance with their mission, than that of counter-hearters.

The ships were modernized in the 1960s. They were disarmed in the 1980s to be replaced by the anti-submarine frigates Class Georges Leygues and Anti-Aerian Cassard class.

Flottilles conductive buildings: (CDF)

  • Three units ( Overcouf , Cassard , Knight Paul ) were fitted into flotilla drivers between 1960 and 1962. In , United States [ 3 ] Offer France to provide free of charge the RIM-24 Tartar weapon system (missiles, launch ramp, shooting and three-dimensional radar). The redesign of the building and the maintenance of the weapon system remaining the responsibility of the beneficiary country. In , the French Navy responds favorably to this offer and requests these conditions the delivery of four tartar weapon systems for 4 T47B, at the rate of one per year, from the summer of 1961.
In , the American organization M.A.A.G. indicates that the first system will be delivered during the second half of 1961, and specifies that the receiving building must be ” Earmarked for NATO Command “, which the French government accepts without reservation. But in The M.A.A.G. reports that US military aid to allies is restricted and that consequently the delivery of the last three systems will no longer be free. Indeed, only the first weapon system, installed on the Dupet-Thouars will be offered by the United States. [ 4 ] .
