After studying higher at the University of Oklahoma, he became a professional jazz drummer before devoting himself solely to writing. He started his literary career by publishing dozens of new westerns from 1948 in pulps specializing in this genre. In 1952, he published The Colonel\u2019s Lady . The following year, he made a first attempt in the detective novel with Whom Gods Destroy , a story on illegal alcohol traffic and the Oklahama bootleggers, then, under the pseudonym of Jonathan Gant, The cravings (1957), on the hectic escape of a killer. In 1953, however, he appeared It is awake , his most famous western, who convinces him to continue in this genre.
