Just like its first success Careless Whisper Two years earlier, this walk became an essential piece of the pop repertoire of its interpreter. She tells the story of a love separation and is inspired by a painful personal situation. The public received it very favorably since it ranked n O 1 In the hit-parades in several countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada.

His black and white clip, whose refined aesthetic is the work of the director of photography David Watkin, allowed the singer to give herself a more mature image when he leaves his group and prepares the design of his first album Faith , released in 1987. A Different Corner has often been taken up by other artists, notably Chris Martin, leader of the Coldplay group, during a posthumous tribute in 2017.

In July 1984, George Michael was an important success with his first solo song Careless Whisper [ first ] , while continuing to be haloed by the popularity of his group Wham! whose album Make It Big dominates British and American hit-parades during this period alongside Madonna or Bruce Springsteen [ A 1 ] . But after his world tour, from December 1984 to September 1985, George Michael devoted himself more to personal projects and collaborates in particular with Elton John [ A 2 ] . His relations with his managers Simon Napier-Bell and Jazz Summers deteriorate due to commercial disagreements [ A 3 ] , [ B 1 ] , even though the new single From Wham! I’m Your Man is received very favorably by the public in the fall of 1985 [ A 3 ] , [ 2 ] . The group finally envisaged its dissolution at the end of 1985: “When I decided to separate us with Andrew, I was in the middle of a very big depression. I knew personal problems at that time, I was experiencing a breakup and I was rather pessimistic about the future of Wham!. I felt trapped by many things in fact [ B 2 ] . »

Musical creation then becomes an expiatory and therapeutic gesture [ B 3 ] . Thus, George Michael releases a new circumstance title entitled A Different Corner . In 2014, the singer implies that he would have started writing it by his majority, that is to say around 1981, at the same time as Careless Whisper : “I think we can say that A Different Corner is really the lament of a man whose heart has been broken. I was about nineteen and the best criticism I heard on my song came from a friend who said to me: “It’s beautiful, quite disillusioned, but beautiful” [ 3 ] . » In 1986, George Michael’s sentimental problems led him to take back his writing and to get emotionally involved in his vocal interpretation: “This is the first time that I have put so much personal experience and emotion in a song. […] Conversely, Careless Whisper never really touched me [ B 3 ] . » The song comes out in single in March 1986 in the United Kingdom under the Epic label with an instrumental version opposite B [ C 1 ] . It is also integrated into the group’s latest album The Final In June 1986, released in North America and Japan in July under the title Music from the Edge of Heaven with more unpublished titles and a long version of A Different Corner [ C 1 ] . Despite his personal difficulties, George Michael wanted to treat the end of this collective adventure: “During the recording of our last EP, I was very depressed, but there was no question of going back. […] I arrived at the conclusion that the best proof to give to the public was a very good disc and an excellent concert [ B 4 ] . »

Music [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

George Michael records his song alone in the studio in Paris by playing all the instruments [ C 2 ] , [ D 1 ] . Just like his previous single Careless Whisper , he composes a ballad with a moderate tempo of 100 Beats per minute , in sun major [ C 2 ] , [ 4 ] . The song, in its long version, opens onto the melody of a synthesizer. This then returns in cadence, while being associated with other keyboards, including the piano. A musical interlude with guitar accompaniment creates a break between the first three couplets and the last four, the title having no chorus [ C 2 ] , [ 5 ] . The singer’s vocal range is between the notes era 3 And sun 4 , gradually passing “A desperate whisper with a cry of pain” According to his biographer Rob Jovanovic [ C 2 ] , [ 4 ] . In 2014, producer Phil Ramone imagined arrangements for orchestra in a version live release on the album Symphonica [ 6 ] .

The , Wham! occurs on the scene of the Brixton Academy In London (above, in 2009), and George Michael interpreted his title in concert for the first time.

Before Wham! does not separate and does not play his last concert in front of 72,000 people at the Wembley stadium [ A 4 ] , the group occurs And in a London concert hall called Brixton Academy [ 7 ] . When singing A Different Corner , George Michael indicates to the public that it is a deeply sincere piece [ D 1 ] . Indeed, his single is dedicated to the memory of an anonymous person ( to a memory » ), probably linked to this previous rupture which affected it a lot [ 8 ] , [ Note 1 ] . The song actually talks about a passionate love story with melancholy ( I’d say love was a magical thing / I’d say love would keep us from pain » , in French : “I thought love was a magical thing / I thought he could protect us from the pain” ) [ B 5 ] . Even if this link was very short -lived, the separation literally distraught the partner who is expressed ( I don’t understand it, for you it’s a breeze / Little by little you’ve brought me to my knees » , in French : “I do not understand, for you it was just a story of passage / little by little, you completely overwhelmed me” ) [ B 6 ] . He finally wondered if it was worth putting himself as a couple ( Take me back in time maybe I can forget / Turn a different corner and we never would have met / Would you care? » , in French : “And if I went back in time, maybe I could forget you / take another path, we would never have met / would that leave you indifferent?” »» ) [ B 5 ] . At the end of the song, the interpreter even has the impression of having been just a puppet ( And if all that there is this fear of being used / I should go back to being lonely and confused / If I could, I would, I swear » , in French : “And if all that I had to remember was this fear of having been manipulated / then I would better go back to my solitude and my torpor / if only I could, I would do it, I swear” ) [ B 5 ] . The link between this song and the life of its author is very close, since George Michael himself explains that he drew his inspiration from a relationship where his love and media life became incompatible [ B 5 ] , [ D 1 ] .

Press reception [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

In 1986, journalist David Fricke published a review of the album Music from the Edge of Heaven in the American magazine Rolling Stone . When the latter evokes A Different Corner , he talks about a walk where George Michael “Wraps his sweet murmurs of a cloud of synthesizers [ 9 ] » . After the singer’s death, some media continue to evoke him as an important title of his career. In 2016, on the website Inquisitr , journalist Daryl Deino explains that his first two solo successes allowed him to be appreciated by a more mature audience ( adult contemporary » ), while he was still part of a group for teenagers [ 5 ] . On Pitchfork in 2018, the critic and musician Brad Nelson sums up his impressions in these terms: “Accompanied by a black and white clip with a very stripped -down style, this sad and strange piece seems elusive: the slight flauconous notes of the synthesizer and the tenor voice of George Michael literally fly into the air. While being sublime and hesitant at the same time, this melody offers emotions and then takes them very slowly, leaving you with a feeling of immense loneliness [ ten ] . » In 1987, George Michael will evoke love with much more confidence and ease in I Want Your Sex , in particular to definitively break with the asexual image of its boys band [ A 5 ] , [ ten ] .

The song clip is apparently very sober: he only shows George Michael in a white and practically empty interior setting [ 8 ] . This color is also found on the cover of single Designed by the agency Peter Saville Associates and illustrated by a photograph of Trevor Key [ 28 ] , [ 29 ] . The images of the clip alternate in the background chained close -ups on the singer’s face with overall plans turned to the Louma by the American cameraman Ken Barrows [ 30 ] , [ thirty first ] . The shooting went in the studio in the spring of 1986 in Los Angeles, probably at Raleigh Studios [ thirty first ] . On the set, George Michael was led by Andy Morahan, with whom he had already worked two years ago for Careless Whisper [ 30 ] . Le Clip de A Different Corner has the distinction of having been shot in black and white on a 35mm Kodak more-X film [ 32 ] . The work on light was entrusted to the English chief operator David Watkin, awarded at the same time by the Oscar for the best photograph for the film Out of Africa de Sydney Pollack [ thirty first ] , [ 33 ] . His participation in George Michael’s clip again allows him to receive the “Best Photography Prize” during the eighth annual conference of the magazine Billboard on video clip in November 1986 [ 34 ] . In addition, according to Tony Parsons, George Michael biographer, this clip perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the song: “This video saturated with white […] gives the impression of having been filmed in a psychiatric asylum or in a hospital. It is well suited to this painful situation where a heart sentence is expressed [ B 3 ] . »

George Michael promotes this song by interpreting it in the British program Top of the Pops the [ 35 ] . He then took it on stage with Wham!, Especially during the group’s farewell concert at the Wembley stadium in London the [ 36 ] . During his solo career, George Michael plays her regularly in concert, especially during tours Faith World Tour (1988-1989) and 25 Live (2006-2010). The , he even offers an acoustic version on the set of talk show British from Michael Parkinson [ 37 ] , [ 38 ] . During the tour Symphonica (2011-2012), he takes it up this time by being accompanied by a symphonic orchestra. In 2014, this version live is integrated into a eponymous album And its interpretation at the Paris Opera Garnier in 2012 is recorded for a BBC television program [ 6 ] , [ 3 ] . George Michael has always felt a particular feeling by singing this title in public, as he reveals in his autobiography: “My way of proceeding is strange enough: I understood that what I had to do to interpret it in live , it was to control my emotions at a certain level of stability. Indeed, I could do my best to contain them, I always finished the song at the edge of tears, which could completely upset my voice and everything else. I then agreed to let in my painful memories in my interpretation, but without ever that they do not take me, otherwise I can no longer sing it. A Different Corner has always had a somewhat special place [ B 7 ] . »

Chris Martin (above, in 2017), singer of the Coldplay group, pays tribute to George Michael by resuming his song a few months after his disappearance .

The most striking resumption took place on the occasion of a tribute to George Michael during the 37 It is Brit Awards ceremony broadcast live on On the ITV channel in the United Kingdom. »

Some singers have sometimes chosen to interpret it in concert: this is particularly the case of Joe Mcelderry in 2018 [ 44 ] . The winner of the sixth season of the British tele-hook The X Factor had also had the chance to share the scene with George Michael during the final of the show in 2009 where they had resumed together Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me [ 45 ] . Still in 2018, the Belgian Jasper Steverlinck, founder of the Rock Arid group, offers a version live For the Flemish radio program Joe [ forty six ] , [ 47 ] . In addition, many performers, often unknown to the general public, brought the song to other musical genres. In the late 1990s, the English Crooner John Barr signed a rather jazz version [ 48 ] , [ 49 ] , and the Kymaera group, led by English guitarist Simon James, makes a title new age [ 50 ] , [ 51 ] . In 2007, Thad Foster and B.E. Mann, both from the United States, signed a country and reggae version respectively [ 52 ] , [ 53 ] , [ 54 ] , [ 55 ] . Finally, in 2015, the Greek DJ Mansta made it a remix with the participation of the American Nomi Ruiz in singing [ 56 ] , [ 57 ] .
