Eric de Vlaeminck is a Belgian cyclist, born on in Eeklo and died on in Wilskerke [ first ] . The eldest of Roger de Vlaeminck is two years. Professional from 1966 to 1980, he was the record holder of victories at the Elite Cyclo-cross champion with seven successes, including six consecutive. On the road, he also won a 1968 Tour de France stage. The Eric de Vlaeminck Grand Prix, a cyclo-cross, has been organized since 2000 in his honor.

Cyclo-cross specialist, Eric de Vlaeminck is world champion in the discipline on seven times (in 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973), this is a record [ 2 ] . He obtained his first title at barely 20 years – the first for a Belgian runner – and quickly became an ambassador of the discipline in Belgium [ 3 ] , that it helps to popularize [ 2 ] . In 1967, he lost the title due to a mechanical problem during the race. He was also quadruple Belgian Cyclo-cross champion in 1967, 1969, 1971 and 1972.

He also obtained very good results on the road. In 1968, he won a stage in the Tour de France and the following year, he won the Tour of Belgium and the Championship of Flanders. At ease on the spring classics, he signed two podiums on the Walloon arrow (1969 and 1970), a third place on Gand-Wevelgem (1969), and a Top 10 on Liège-Bastogne-Liège (fourth in 1970) and Paris-Roubaix (ninth in 1970) [ 2 ] .

Eric participated in the victory of his brother Roger over Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 1970, where he won his first great classic. In the entry tunnel of the Rocourt Velodrome, six runners show up in the lead, with Roger de Vlaeminck in mind in front of his brother Éric. This closes the passage to Eddy Merckx, while Roger takes the opportunity to attack and obtain a sufficient advantage of 12 seconds to win the race in front of Frans Verbeeck and a furious Eddy Merckx [ 4 ] . De Vlaeminck has never missed anti -doping control in his racing career, but he was treated after dependence on amphetamine. Many stories circulate about his wild behavior supposed after the races. There was a time interned in a psychiatric service, probably the victim of doping products consumed during his career [ 5 ] .

After his career, he became coach of the national team. Between 1989 and 2002, under his orders, the Belgian runners won twenty-nine medals [ 2 ] . Of Vlaeminck coaches the world champion of cyclo-cross Niels Albert for a while, but must give up because he suffers from diseases of Parkinson and Alzheimer [ 2 ] .

De Vlaeminck is Roger de Vlaeminck’s older brother, one of the best classic history runners in history. His son, Geert died in 1993 of a heart attack during a cyclo-cross race where his father came to encourage him [ 2 ] .

Vlaeminck who suffered from diseases of Parkinson and Alzheimer’s, dies the at the age of 70 [ 2 ] .

In 2002, Eric de Vlaeminck was one of the runners selected in the Hall of Fame of the International Cycling Union [ 6 ] .
