Franz Poenitz or Franz von Burkovitz of his birth name (born on August 17, 1850 in Bischoferder, Prussian province – deceased the 19 mars 1912 ^{[ note 1 ]}in Berlin) is a German harpist and composer.

Franz Poenitz and his sister their father in their childhood while their mother dies by giving birth to the third son of the family. His maternal aunt is the wife of the violinist Heinrich Poenitz who recognizes the talent of the young man and decides to adopt the two brothers. Franz thus acquires the name of his adoptive father who teaches him the violin. He took harp lessons in 1855 and successfully performed in Sweden, then in Berlin in 1858. He learned the harp with Louis Grimm and the composition with Carl Friedrich Weitzmann (of) .

At the age of sixteen, he joined the Royal Court opera in Berlin as a Chambriste and became a soloist in 1891.
