His maternal aunt is the wife of the violinist Heinrich Poenitz who recognizes the talent of the young man and decides to adopt the two brothers. Franz thus acquires the name of his adoptive father who teaches him the violin. He took harp lessons in 1855 and successfully performed in Sweden, then in Berlin in 1858.
