Freshlyground (“Freshly ground” in English) is a South African music group. It was born in 2002 in CAP. Its members come from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Freshlyground’s music is a fusion of traditional African music such as kwela and African folk music, blues, jazz and variety, which also incorporates independent rock elements.

The main singer of Freshlyground is Zolani Mahola, whose characteristic voice contributes largely to the unique sound of the group.

In July 2004, Freshlyground broke with the recording studio with which they had worked hard on the album then unpublished Rainy .

The group takes advantage of this interlude to participate in the “Villa Celimontana” festival in Rome.

FreshlyGround made in 2006 an international tour which leads them from the Kirstenbosch national botanical garden to Europe, with dates in Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, France and Italy [ first ] .

To celebrate their ten years of group, the members of the Freshlyground group have been a tour through South Africa. Among all these concerts, some were free.

In July 2006, FreshlyGround participated in the official ceremony for the delivery of the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany [ 2 ] , as a representative of the host country of the following World Cup planned in South Africa. The group occurs during the closing ceremony of the World Cup, and then shares the scene with Johnny Clegg and Sibongile Khumalo.

Since 2007 : MA ‘Cheri , Radio Africa And Take Me To The Dance [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Freshlyground’s third album is MA ‘Cheri , released on September 3, 2007. This album was produced by JB Arthur and Victor Masondo and was recorded in CAP. The first single East Potbelly followed by Fired Up And Desire .

In May 2010, the group of the group entitled Radio Africa , carried by the single Fire is Low . A few weeks after its release, the album is certified gold record in South Africa.

Take Me To The Dance , their fifth album, will be released on October 22, 2012 in South Africa.

On January 23, 2010, FreshlyGround played during the inauguration of the new Cape Town Stadium, where local football clubs Ajax Cape Town Football Club and Santos Cape Town Football Club clashed.

The song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) From the FreshlyGround and Shakira group, released on April 26, 2010, is the official song of the 2010 Football World Cup. The song is inspired by a famous Makossa song from the Cameroonian group Golden Sounds entitled Blossom who had been successful in Colombia in 1987.

They interpreted this title on June 10, 2010 during the opening concert of the World Football at the Orlando stadium in Soweto [ 3 ] And again during the tournament closing ceremony which took place on July 11, 2010 in the Soccer City stadium in the Soweto district [ 4 ] .

South African Music Awards (SAMA) [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

In 2005, Freshlyground was appointed there three times; However, the group has won nothing, the awards returning to successful artists such as Zola and Simphiwe Dana.

In 2008, Freshlyground won four sama at the South African Music Awards, for “Album of the Year”, “Best Duo/Group”, “Best Engineer” and “Best Contemporary Album for Adults in English”

Freshlyground is awarded the Best African Act (Best African show) on November 2, 2006 during the MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony in Copenhagen. This is the first South Africans to have ever been rewarded by MTV.

In 2008, FreshlyGround was designated as the best group in the “Southern Africa” category [ 5 ] .
