Olivia Dunham is a young federal agent assigned to the section Fringe After his companion was exposed to a bacteriological agent. Lonely and animated by a strong sense of justice, she devotes herself completely to her work. It has an eidetic memory. She was the victim of W.Bell and Walter’s tests when she was small.

Walter Bishop [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Walter Bishop is a gifted scientist who formerly worked for the United States government. Formerly William Bell’s laboratory companion, he was interned for seventeen years in a psychiatric institute after an incident that led to the death of his assistant.

Peter Bishop [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Embodied by Joshua Jackson.

Peter Bishop is Walter’s son. Spirit as brilliant as his father in the scientific field, he will however be sent from the university due to game debts. When the series begins, Olivia goes to seek him in Iraq to help him get Walter out of the psychiatric asylum where he is locked up. Contrely, he will agree to be his father’s legal guardian but does not intend to stay in the United States. First reluctant, he will however agree to integrate the team as a “civil consultant” of the FBI and will second his father in his experiences.

Embodied by Lance Reddick.

Phillip Broyles is the director of the section Fringe . He has the rank of colonel, then is promoted general in the last episode of the 4 It is season. Although very professional and respectful of the procedures, Broyles can be surprisingly flexible when it comes to managing the particular circumstances of the cases in which its section is led to investigate.

Astrid Farnsworth [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Astrid Farnsworth is a young FBI agent responsible for assisting Olivia Dunham. Although endowed in various fields (IT, cryptography, etc.), she will in fact become the main collaborator of Walter Bishop by working alongside her in her secret laboratory of Harvard University. Walter, although he knows his name perfectly, calls him frequently (by distraction and/or by reference) Astro, Aspic (at one point where Walter asked him for a syringe), asteroid, Athos or Astrix or Asterisk.

Nina Sharp is an enigmatic character. Executive director of Massive Dynamic, she exercises high functions and, although she says she wants to help the section Fringe In her investigations, we understand that she is pursuing her own goals above all and that she hides unavowable secrets. She maintains special relations with Phillip Broyles and she knew Bishop father and son long before Walter’s internment.
In the new chronology of season 4, she adopted Olivia when she was a child, developing a special relationship with her. His double alternative combines with David Robert Jones, before being arrested by Fauxlivia.
In 2036, Nina Sharp moved to a wheelchair and worked at the Ministry of Sciences in New York. Secretly combined with resistance, she is forced to commit suicide to protect the fugitives.

In the alternative universe, he is the captain of the Fringe division.
In the original universe, he is a simple FBI agent who collaborates with Olivia and Peter in a case, before finding himself assigned to the Fringe division.

William Bell [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Doctor William Bell is the president and founder of Massive Dynamic, a gigantic company specializing in high technologies. He is the former laboratory partner of Walter Bishop, both having known students. Without everyone, he now lives in a reality parallel to that of the protagonists, and works for the US Ministry of Defense of this universe. He died at the end of the second season. However, he returned in the fourth season, in a new chronology. He turns out to be the superior of David Robert Jones, who was able to cross from one universe to another. He then tries to destroy the two realities to create his own universe, but fails thanks to Walter. He fled then.
He returns some time later to help the team fight against observers. He notably enters possession of two tags necessary for the Walter and September plan. But he decides to betray the team once again, before being amber with them. Not having been released, his body is recovered by the men of Windmark.

September, the observer, is a mysterious character present each time an important event in the section Fringe occurs. It is part of a larger team of observers spread around the world. Bald, devoid of eyebrows and systematically carrying the same black suit, it appears in each episode, more or less hidden. He cannot intervene in the course of the events he observes and seems to know the future. He uses twins of sophisticated technology with which he seems to take measures. He notes his observations using unknown writing in a black notebook. As their investigations progressed, the members of the FRIGEN section realize that it is present on all places where unexplained events have occurred. By trying to find information concerning him, they discover that the observer has always attended the main historical events, and this in the two universes. In addition, it has advanced technology and supernatural powers.
He finally revealed to be a member of a team of scientists from a future where in 2609, the earth will be destroyed by human action. September and other observers are then sent to the past to study human evolution, without intervening. September, by distracting Walter-Ego during his research, triggers a series of events which lead to the removal of the alternative Peter by the original Walter, the trigger of a war between our two universes and the birth of the Son of Fauxlivia and from Peter.
This child being a temporal anomaly, observers simply decide to erase Peter from space-time. But September chooses to disobey the orders of his superiors and lets can reappear. He also warns Walter of the real objective of observers: taking control of the earth in our time. He therefore helps Walter to design a defense plan, and takes the name of Donald. After imprisonment in Walter’s amber and the others, he begins to follow his plan himself, before mysteriously disappeared.

Charlie Francis [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Embodied by Kirk Acevedo.

Charlie Francis is the assistant of Phillip Broyles and therefore the number two of the section Fringe . A close friend of Olivia and her companion, John Scott, the latter never hesitates to request him if necessary. He is killed by a polymorph at the start of season 2, which takes its place before Dunham discovers the deception and cut it off.

Rachel Dunham [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Embodied by Ari Graynor.

Rachel Dunham is Olivia’s sister. Mother of young Ella but separated from her husband Greg, she seems to have a number of hooked atoms with Peter Bishop; Some of their common interests concern Olivia.

David Robert Jones [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Embodied by Jared Harris.

David Robert Jones is a biochemist who was long imprisoned in Germany. Formerly used by Massive Dynamic, the company of its mentor William Bell, it is contacted by Olivia following a bioterrorist attack requiring its collaboration. He then managed to escape thanks to a teleportation system developed by Walter Bishop, with the help of Mitchell Loeb. It is linked to ZFT and turns out to be the instigator of the “project”, intended to show William Bell and to the rest of the world the full extent of his scientific talent. He died at the end of the first season, cut in two by the closure of the inter-dimensional door he had opened in order to run away to the parallel universe. However, he returned in season 4, where he turns out to be the designer of the new polymorphs on which the “Friging” section investigates. Indeed, it is revealed that in this new continuity implemented at the end of season 3, Jones managed to flee to the other universe without Peter preventing it, the latter having been erased from the course time. The main antagonist of the fourth season, he seems to have the aim of starting the collapse of the two universes, in order to create a new one, which he would shape himself. It is in reality only subordinate of William Bell. He died in the penultimate episode of the season, where he understands that he was “sacrificed”.
His name is a reference to singer David Bowie whose name in civil status was David Robert Jones [ first ] .

Sanford Harris is a close friend of Phillip Broyles and a former member of marines . Following a sexual assault, he was prosecuted by Olivia and sentenced to several years in prison. Then became a high-placé member of the Pentagon, he is sent to assess the operation of the section Fringe . A mission that puts him against Olivia again and awakens old tensions. He died burned at the end of season 1.

Mitchell loeb [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Mitchell Loeb is an FBI agent. Unscrupulous character, he is in fact linked to the ZFT bioterrorist cell. He helps David Jones escape thanks to Walter Bishop’s teleportation system.

John Scott [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Embodied by Mark Valley.

John Scott is the partner and lover of Olivia Dunham. During a mission, it is contaminated by a bacteriological agent who makes his skin translucent. Placed under treatment, it will prove to be a guilty agent at the NSA service, trying to infiltrate ZFT. He died during a chase, but part of his mind will be “trapped” in that of Olivia, who will speak with him some time before disappearing.

Alternative version of Walter Bishop, Walter-Ego lies on the “other side”, in a parallel universe. Much cold and hard than his counterpart in our dimension, he exercises the function of secretary of defense of the United States; He is also the head of the FRIGEN section. Since his son Peter Bishop was kidnapped by Walter Bishop, he has prepared to deliver a war against the original universe.
His nickname is the contraction of “Walter” and “Alter-ego”. In English, it is called “Walternate”.

Fauxlivia [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Alternative version of Olivia Dunham, Fauxlivia lies on the “other side”, in a parallel universe. She is an agent of the fringent section of this second universe. Certain details of his professional and personal life are different from that of the Olivia of the original universe. Thus, unlike the Olivia of the first world, she is red, her mother is still alive on the other hand her sister died in diapers. She is also Olympic shooting champion. She also seems to be more sure of her, more sociable and less withdrawn. During the third season, she is responsible by Walter-Ego to infiltrate the Friging section of the original universe by pretending to be Olivia, which remained captive of the parallel universe. During this period, she begins a relationship with Peter, who in no way suspects the deception, before being finally discovered and then repatriated in her universe. Pregnant with Peter, his secret is discovered by Walter-Ego who then secretly loads his scientists to remove it in order to accelerate the pregnancy process and, thus, to use the blood of his grandson, containing the DNA of Peter, to activate the machine of the first men. She is led to collaborate with her double in season 4, where the two Fringe sections must work together to counter Jones’ projects, following the merger of their universes. Embodied by Orla Brady.

She is Walter Bishop’s wife and Peter’s mother in both universes. She will have a lot of trouble accepting the death of her son, but will not agree with Walter when the latter decides to kidnap the peter of the alternative world. After separating from Walter, following her internment, she committed suicide in 2001 in what was akin to a car accident, unable to support her feeling of guilt.

In the alternative world, she is still married to Walter-Ego.

He is one of the most important scientists working for Massive Dynamic. He regularly helps members of the Fringe division.
In the alternative universe, he occupies a direct place within the Fringe division, where he is a scientific advisor very close to the Walter Bishop secretary. It is he who has the idea of ​​replacing Olivia Dunham by Fauxlivia. He is assassinated in the chronology of season 4.
Note that Brandon Fayette is a special effects technician, who has worked in particular Star Trek by J. J. Abrams, who also produces Fringe .

Captain Windmark is an observer supervising the occupation of the land in 2036. It comes from a future where in 2609 our planet will be destroyed by humanity, forcing men to travel to the past. Departing from any remorse, he is a formidable opponent for resistance.
The technology developed in its time offers him many capacities such as teleportation, great speed and telepathy. Its main objective is the destruction of the resistance and the capture of members of the Fringe division released from amber. It is in particular he who destroys Walter’s memories by torturing him, thus preventing him from remembering the plan to defeat the observers, and who executes Henrietta, the daughter of Peter and Olivia. A violent duel begins between him and Peter Bishop, who ends up abandoning the latter. Subsequently, he discovers that Nina Sharp works with resistance, but she commits suicide before the interrogation. The existence of Michael, the observer child, is also revealed to him.
He returned soon after in 2609 to investigate the child, which is actually a numbered genetic anomaly XB-6783746. Fearing a possible defeat of observers, he does not obtain authorization to return to a past era where he could eradicate the fugitives.
Back in 2036, he finally got his hands on the anomaly XB-6783746. Michael turns out to be stronger than him. Unable to read in him, Windmark orders his dissection. Olivia recovers the boy with the help of Broyles. Captain Windmark discovers that the latter is a double agent and has it arrested. During the interrogation, the siege of observers was attacked by Peter and Olivia. Broyles, his two saviors, September and Michael are finally ready to apply the plan.
But the captain of the observers did not say his last word. A struggle to death engages between him, Peter and Olivia. Very quickly Windmark puts his two opponents on the ground. But Olivia, using her telepathic powers from the cortexiphan, finally aveng her daughter by crushing the observer between two cars.

Michael [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Embodied by Spencer List in season 1, then by Rowan Longworth in season 5.

Michael is a young observer from human cloning, in the future. Considered a genetic anomaly, it had to be destroyed. His “father”, September, decides to hide it in the past to save him.
In 2009, a bald and silent young boy was discovered by the Fringe team. With empathic capacities, he helps Olivia to stop a murderer. He is then placed in a host family.
In the new temporal line, Walter and Donald (September) hide it in a pocket of the universe. The team goes to research it because it is essential to the Walter plan, but it has disappeared from the pocket universe. They discover that the boy is actually an observer. He is finally located in a resistant family, who named him Michael. It is recovered by the fugitives.
After finding Donald, the team discovers the role of Michael in the plan: he must be sent in 2167, where the creator of the observers will see that the emotions should not necessarily be removed to make smarter men. This should therefore simply eliminate observers as they have evolved and therefore prevent the invasion.

Special section [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The special section (“Fringe Division” in original version) is a branch of the F.B.I. responsible for investigating paranormal phenomena threatening the security of the United States. Its seat is located in Boston. It is led by Phillip Broyles and brings together both real F.B.I. such as Olivia Dunham and Astrid Farnsworth, and consultants like Bishop and Nina Sharp.
In the alternative universe, it depends on the army and the Ministry of Defense. Its role is to fight against the collapse of space-time by sticking space-time flaws thanks to amber. She is led by Colonel Broyles with under his commandment Fauxlivia and Captain Lee. The Bishop are not part as consultants, Walter-Ego being the defense secretary and Peter belonging to that of the original universe.

Z.F.T. [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Z.F.T. (Zerstörung Durch Fortschritt der Technik: literally: destruction by the progress of science) is a bio-terrorist organization at the origin of most of the events on which the special section is investigating. Following the guidelines of a manifesto written by William Bell, she is preparing for a future war against the other universe. The death of his leader, David Robert Jones, ends the existence of the organization.
When Peter is erased by observers and time is rewritten from season 4, Jones is also brought back to life. He was therefore able to join Bell in the alternative universe. The two men join their efforts to try to destroy the two universes and create a new one. Their plan is ultimately thwarted by Walter, Peter and Olivia.

Massive Dynamic is a gigantic multinational founded by scientist William Bell, former partner of Walter Bishop. It is at the origin of the many innovations and great scientific discoveries, in all possible areas. Since the disappearance of its founder, Massive Dynamic has been directed by Nina Sharp and collaborates closely with the F.B.I. In 2036, the company no longer existed and was replaced by the Ministry of Sciences of Observers.
In the alternative universe, Massive Dynamic does not exist because the William Bell of this universe died young. Walter-Ego nevertheless founded his own business there before becoming defense secretary: Bishop Dynamic.

Observers [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Observers are human beings, some generations after our time. They come from a long process of human controlled evolution, started in Oslo the : A scientist in fact discovers that by removing the parts of the brain responsible for emotions, one could increase intellectual capacities. Devoid of emotions and feelings, they go so far as to replace natural reproduction by cloning. Their capacities allow them to develop technology to travel in time and space. Twelve scientists are thus sent to the past to study history.
In 2609, they end up destroying any possibility of life on earth by poisoning the soil, water and air. A large number of observers are then sent in the past in 2015 to take control of the earth. A fierce struggle engages with human resistance, then with the original fringent division.
The observers finally lose the fight: Walter and Michael travel until 2167 and change the course of time. Humans decide not to abandon emotions for the benefit of intelligence, and so they do not hit the earth in 2015.

Secondary observers [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

  • December (Eugene Lipinski) is the leader of the twelve scientists sent to the past to study the history of humanity. Like his colleagues, contact with humans gives birth in him the ability to feel emotions. He nevertheless opposed to September when he tries to help the Bishop and Olivia. In 2036, he ended up changing his mind and helped September to obtain an essential element of his plan. He is then hanged by the loyalists for betrayal.
  • August is also one of the twelve scientists. He fascinates himself for a young girl, Christine Hollis, planning her importance without managing to understand the reasons. He sacrifices himself by saving the life of Christine, making her the first human responsible for the death of an observer.
  • The commander (James Kidnie) is the leader of observers in 2609.
