The association was born in Florence in 1939 from the idea of \u200b\u200bthree amateurs of the beautiful book, Ugo Ojetti, Tammaro de Marinis, Gilberta Serlupi Crescenzi, whose intent was to raise the quality of the printing of the Italian book, very decayed, after the splendor reached in past centuries.A bibliophile for each of the large Italian cities assumed the task of making the initiative known and collecting inscriptions by proposing, despite the other spirit, the phenomenon of book subscriptions in use by the eighteenth century.Assocates of this kind already existed in Europe, in Italy it was the first and made use of the books of the fundamental contribution of Giovanni Mardersteig for 37 years.The first volume published in 120 specimens under the guidance of this great printer was “L’aminta” of the Tasso with seven etchings by Francesco Chiappelli.The first three presidents of the association were renowned writers: Ugo Ojetti from 1939 to 1946, Giulio Caprin from 1947 to 1952 and Bino Sanminiathelli from 1953 to 1976.In 1979 the company’s headquarters was transferred from Florence to Milan under the presidency of Alberto Falck, who led the association for 27 years until his sudden disappearance in 2003. This tragic event led the members to adapt the statute, in the continuity of the purposes original, to the changed corporate and management needs. The new Board of Directors elected President Paolo Tirelli, Gaetano Fermani in 2012 was successful; Since May 2013, the association has chaired by Laura Persico Tirelli.Over the years, the hundred friends of the book have published 47 volumes of high literary and artistic content, printed by the best printers. All editions include texts of well -known writers and poets, many of whom are unpublished such as the poems of Mario Luzi, Eugenio de Signoribus, Andrea Zanzotto, Maria Luisa Spaziani. They collaborated in the realization of the volumes famous Italian and foreign artists, by Pietro Annigoni, Fausto Melotti, Renato Guttuso, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mimmo Paladino, Walter Valentini, Emilio Isgr\u00f2, G\u00e9rard Titus-Carmel, Tullio Danrica, Joe Tilson, just to name a few.In essence, the works of the hundred friends of the book offer a cross -section of Italian art of the last seventy years.
