The gendarme in New York [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

From the shooting, the writers, the director and Louis de Funès mentioned the idea of giving a follow -up to the Saint-Tropez gendarme [ a ] . Years of uncertainty [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

At the start of the 1973 school year, where Louis de Funès began the play The waltz of the Toreadors , the press evokes The ghost of the Saint-Tropez gendarme , of which Richard Balducci wrote the script, and who must turn during the season [ f ] .

In the spring of 1974, Richard Balducci worked on a fifth episode entitled The gendarme to the exercise , with a set scheduled for early summer 1975 [ 3 ] . After the trying performance of The waltz of the Toreadors In the theater, where he has several cardiac alerts, Louis de Funès cancels the project, preferring to take a break of one year before embarking on The crocodile de Gérard Oury, whose filming planned for May 1975 promises to be very physical [ g ] .

Late return [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

[ modifier | Modifier and code ]

In September 1977, after his successful return to the cinema, Louis de Funès expressed the producer Gérard Beytout of his desire to find the gendarme of Saint-Tropez [ h ] . The following month, he asked the scriptwriter Jacques Vilfrid to embark on the writing of the project [ h ] . Richard Balducci is only involved in this fifth film [ 4 ] . Impressed by Third -type dating From Steven Spielberg and its special effects, the main actor decides that the fifth film will be intrigued by a meeting between extraterrestrials and the Saint-Tropez brigade [ i ] . The theme of extraterrestrials is then very fashionable at the end of the 1970s, in the cinema as on television, in the midst of the science fiction engaged by the success of Star Wars [ i ] .

The shooting is bereaved by the fatal accident caused by a cascade failed in front of the gendarmerie.

The gendarme and the extraterrestrials Black one and counts 6 million admissions in more than a year [ 5 ] . Critique reserves a severe welcome to the film, even if some believe that it is ” Safe ” by the performance of Louis de Funès [ j ] .

The extraterrestrials defeated by the Saint-Tropez brigade had to take revenge in a suite.

The surprising success in theaters of the fifth film encourages the team immediately thinking about a sixth, staging the revenge of the beaten alien [ k ] . During the promotion, Louis de Funès evokes his desires and his potential future films: “I started writing. Others, too, write for me … I take notes all the time … things that amuse me, silent situations preferably. I would like my next film to be almost silent ” [ l ] . The future production took shape in the summer of 1979 [ m ] . When filming The stingy , more personal project than Louis de Funès in the meantime, the next Gendarme is announced, temporarily entitled The gendarme and revenge of the alien [ 6 ] . Following the dream – often mentioned but constantly postponed – of the main actor to shoot a silent film, this suite in space would have been almost silent, with many special effects, weightless scenes, video special effects and sound findings [ n ] , [ m ] .

One of the envisaged synopsis would be that Cruchot is removed by the revanchard aliens and, after a weightless trip, would be led to a strange planet, conducive to abnormal experiences [ O ] . Louis de Funès himself evokes the intrigue in these terms: “The extraterrestrials have lost a battle but not the war. They take me with all the gendarmes, and here we are in space, in weightlessness then on a bizarre planet, where we are waiting for unusual adventures ” [ m ] . Another possibility would be for the brigade to be removed and brought to a planet only populated by pretty girls; production launches an advertisement in France-Soir with young actresses who must send a photo at the end to apply on The gendarme and the revenge of aliens , at the end of 1979 [ p ] .

The sixth Gendarme is about to be shot in the summer of 1981 [ 3 ] . The sets are in preparation and the tracking has been launched [ 3 ] , [ N 3 ] . After The stingy , Louis de Funès cancels the project and is more oriented on the adaptation of the novel Cabbage soup by René Fallet, another story of extraterrestrial meeting, which comes out in theaters in [ q ] , [ 8 ] . When coming back to Saint-Tropez gendarme , the idea of a return of the extraterrestrials is again ruled out, so as not to tire the actor’s audience after already two films on the subject [ k ] , [ n ] , [ 8 ] .

The grave of Jean Girault, died before the sixth Gendarme is not finished.

The screenwriter Jacques Vilfrid finds the final subject of the sixth film when he learns in the press the training of women at the Gendarmerie school in Fontainebleau [ n ] , [ r ] . The time saw the feminization of many trades and the national gendarmerie is gradually open to women at the dawn of the 1980s [ n ] , [ s ] , [ t ] , [ 9 ] . The gendarme and the gendarmettes thus confronts the Saint-Tropez brigade with new female recruits [ n ] , [ r ] . The project was launched in 1981 [ t ] . Jean Girault, Louis de Funès, his friend Macha Béranger, and producer Gérard Beytout also participate in writing [ n ] , [ in ] .

The shooting first takes place in Saint-Tropez and its surroundings in the spring of 1982 and then continued at the Boulogne studios [ t ] , [ r ] , [ in ] . On the set, Louis de Funès shares the realization with Jean Girault, as they did on The stingy And Cabbage soup , but unlike The stingy , the actor does not sign the realization this time [ In ] . The actor thus takes care of the staging and the direction of actors, leaving the technique
to his experienced partner [ x ] , [ and ] . The medical precautions taken for the show, still monitored by a cardiologist, reduce filming to only three or four days of work per week over an extraordinary duration of two and a half months in Saint-Tropez, leaving the team long moments of relaxation [ in ] , [ With ] , [ ten ] , [ 11 ] , [ twelfth ] .

While the death of the main actor is feared by the team, Jean Girault’s state of health becomes worrying [ aa ] , [ ab ] . The director weakens day by day, loses weight, delegates more and more responsibilities to his assistants and ends up very decreased at the end of the Tropézien shooting [ ab ] , [ in ] . Maurice Risch explains: “John was leaving and Louis, who was also very weak, was not enough to master things. Tony Aboyantz, the first assistant director, was trying to hold the film with his head out of the water ” [ and ] . Jean Girault is admitted to the hospital after the team in the Paris region [ With ] , [ in ] . The studios in studios take place without him, carried out as best they can by Tony Aboyantz, in a heavy atmosphere [ With ] , [ in ] , [ 8 ] . He died the , without seeing her film finished [ With ] , [ 8 ] , and his disappearance takes away from his best friend Jacques Vilfrid any desire to write for the cinema [ 13 ] . Tony Aboyantz then directs the assembly, notably helped by Louis de Funès and the composer Raymond Lefebvre [ r ] , [ ad ] , [ 14 ] .

The gendarme and the gendarmettes released in October 1982 and recorded 4.1 million admissions in one year [ 15 ] . Criticism, judging the series which has become too long and immutable, descends the film, notably with the murderous criticism of André Rollin in The chained Duck : “Is funès finished?” The room was almost empty. The screen also ” [ But ] , [ of ] .

Richard Balducci follow -up ideas [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

After The gendarme and the gendarmettes , despite the death of Jean Girault and the withdrawal of Jacques Vilfrid, new films of Gendarme are possible, the series of films that can actually extend as long as Louis de Funès wishes, legitimate to resume his character as many times as he wants [ 16 ] , [ aa ] . For his part, Richard Balducci, a co-chairman of the first films, already imagined several ideas for a sequel to the fifth-fifth-fiction vein [ 4 ] , [ 17 ] . Questioned in the 2000s, he speaks of a scenario that would have shown the gendarme lost in the Bermuda triangle [ 4 ] , [ at ] . He also mentions another idea he calls The gendarme in orbit , where the brigade would be sent to the space adjust the interplanetary traffic that has become chaotic [ at ] , [ 13 ] .

A document entitled Script project for a sequel to the film The gendarme and the extraterrestrials is found in 2010 in the archives of the scriptwriter Jean Halain, faithful collaborator in funerals but who has never worked on a Gendarme [ 18 ] , [ 19 ] , [ N 4 ] . This draft begins in full carnival on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, where a tank celebrates the victory of the Saint-Tropez brigade over the extraterrestrials with immense effigies of the gendarmes, a show in front Passage brigade in Nice [ 18 ] . This sequel depicts the inappropriate return of extraterrestrials who came to take revenge: the gendarmes find themselves in their flying saucer and must meet their chief, called the great strategist or the sovereign master [ 18 ] . On their return to earth, they are deposited on an island of the Bermuda triangle, “The evil area of disasters and disappearances” , element corresponding to the intrigue mentioned by Balducci [ 18 ] . This found scenario is still very mysterious since we do not know who is the author and why a scenario of a Gendarme would be in Jean Halain’s affairs when he has never written for the series [ 18 ] , [ 19 ] .

“There was so much circulation between the planets that we had decided [to put a little order, put red lights, make traffic … and we had decided to send the Saint-Tropez brigade in orbit there -high. In this kind of capsule, Gerber becomes completely crazy with fear and hits everything. The capsule begins to turn upside down from the rotation of the earth. Which means that every three minutes it dates back a day. When they come back to earth, they see a guy on a white horse on a hill. They are in Waterloo and it’s the emperor! »»

– Richard Balgine, to Propos du Gendarme and emperor [ 13 ] .

Finally, the other project of Richard Balducci is a story of time traveling he title The gendarme and the emperor , starting from the idea of the Saint-Tropez brigade responsible for putting order in space traffic [ at ] , [ like ] . The intrigue brings their ship to get hacked after bad manipulations and turning upside down the rotation of the earth, going back in time: the gendarmes land in the middle of the battle of Waterloo, the , and meet the emperor Napoleon I is [ at ] , [ like ] , [ 17 ] , [ N 5 ] . Cruchot and his gendarmes try to help him win the battle [ 20 ] . They tell him about the inventions of XX It is century, especially military [ like ] . Subsequently, the emperor accuses them of betrayal and the gendarmes escape by returning to their ship to return in their time to Saint-Tropez [ like ] . This trip to the past lets Balducci imagine the history of the Cruchot family, in particular an ancestor soldier of the great army and witness to all the campaigns of Napoleon [ N 6 ] . Balducci, turning in parallel with films with Jean Lefebvre, even reintegrates the character of Fougasse [ 17 ] .
The writing would have been started in 1982 [ like ] , [ 17 ] But an announcement nevertheless appeared in 1980 in The French film [ Who ] , [ 21 ] . The gendarme and the emperor would have been approved by Louis de Funès [ 17 ] . A copy of this last scenario of around forty pages is exhibited at the Museum of the Gendarmerie and Cinema of Saint-Tropez, presented as ” the seventh Gendarme » , and a facsimile embellished with a storyboard is offered for sale [ 17 ] .

Without Louis de Funès? [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Louis de Funès, star, engine, and unofficial co-author of the series, dies of a last infarction the . His disappearance puts an end to the films of the Gendarme . It seems impossible to continue the series of films without its star actor [ 22 ] .

In 1985, Richard Balducci continued the universe of Gendarme By wink by taking up the character of the nun interpreted by France Rumilly in her film The Saint-Tropez factor , where the classic gendarmerie building also appears and a different brigade [ 23 ] . Several years later, Balducci is developing synopsis of short episodes for a television series entitled The new gendarmes of Saint-Tropez , project which he presents as a series of films [ at ] . His idea is quickly abandoned, the screenwriter judging that “These new gendarmes would have wronged their elders” [ at ] .

In an indefinite time, an idea of a play of tribute to the Saint-Tropez gendarme and to Louis de Funès is offered to “Survivors” The La Rieber Micheel Modo, Guy Growso, Maurice Ricker it Patrick Rechevenan [ 22 ] .

Already in 2001, the journalist Pierre de Boishue noted in Le Figaro the “Fascination that this timeless fresco exercises on the public, because completely overwhelmed, sometimes hilarious and endless rebroadcast” [ in ] . This frequent programming gives the public the impression that The Saint-Tropez gendarme would be one of the most rebroadcast films on French television but this is not in reality the case, the film not even being the most broadcast work of Louis de Funès [ 26 ] .

Continuity errors [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

By negligence, errors of continuity slip from one film to another.

  • The first names of certain characters thus vary between certain films. Warrant Officer Gerber is named Jérôme in the first four films, then Antoine in The gendarme and the extraterrestrials and Alphonse at the end of the first film The Saint-Tropez gendarme and in the film The gendarme and the gendarmettes [ 40 ] . The nun “crazy about the steering wheel” is called sister Clotilde in the first five films but the dialogues of The gendarme and the gendarmettes The name of Marie-Ange [ 40 ] ; On the other hand, the fact that she becomes a superior mother of her convent in The gendarme on a ride is respected, and we tell him ” my mother ” and no more ” My sister ” From the fourth film.
  • The same actors are engaged in different roles during the series, notably Mario David, Pierre Repp and the “third knife” Dominique Zardi.
  • Grade errors are also committed. Gerber is promoted to chief warrant officer in The gendarme gets married and keep his stripes in The gendarme on a ride , but wears adjutant braids in The gendarme and the gendarmettes .

Other sequences envisaged [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Throughout the adventures of the gendarmes, many tracks have been explored to follow up on the different episodes of the series. We mentioned in the 1960s, the possibility of a Gendarme in the Soviet Union [ 13 ] ; of a Gendarme in Japan [ 41 ] , [ 42 ] , where the Saint-Tropez brigade would have been responsible for finding the painting of the mysteriously disappeared Mona Load; of a Gendarme in Geneva [Ref. necessary] ; of a Gendarme in Bethlehem In 1965 [ 43 ] , in which the Saint-Tropez brigade would be teleported in the city where Christ was born (the idea will ultimately be taken up in a radio tale broadcast on Europe 1 . In this tale Louis de Funès interprets “The Marshal of the Logis Chef Asmaël, of the Palestinian Mounted Mounted Gendarmerie, Brout de Bethlehem, 15 years of service, campaign against the Philistines, campaign against the Egyptians, medal of biblical recognition” while Michel Galabru embodies adjutant Zacchari, superior of Asmaël [ 44 ] ), or Gendarme in Mexico City In 1968, taking place during the summer Olympic Games [ 42 ] . Other scenarios have also been advanced as The ghost of the Saint-Tropez gendarme [ 41 ] , or The gendarme to the exercise In 1975 [ 45 ] .

The national gendarmerie and the films [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

After the success of the suite The gendarme in New York , and while a third film is announced, which becomes a series of films is then conspired by certain gendarmes, who consider their institution turned in ridiculous [ forty six ] . Retired gendarmes – being no longer kept in the duty of reserve – launch petitions, relayed by The rise of the gendarmerie and the guard , to prohibit the filming of new films from Saint-Tropez gendarme [ forty six ] . Yvon Bourges, Secretary of State for Information, officially replied that no ban on these films is envisaged by the government [ forty six ] . In a spirit of appeasement, a warning message is presented before the generic opening The gendarme gets married (1968), repeated in The gendarme on a ride (1970) and The gendarme and the extraterrestrials (1979) [ forty six ] , [ in ] , [ to ] :

“This film presents new adventures of a gendarme “Special issue” .
Work of imagination made for your entertainment, it is, beyond fantasy, an indirect tribute, since it is the subject of it, to a large body of the state whose personnel signify themselves to the respect of the populations by their weighting and their value. »»

– Operating message The gendarme gets married , The gendarme on a ride And The gendarme and the extraterrestrials [ forty six ] .

The two main actors are honored by the French gendarmerie for having contributed to the series. THE , when filming Gendarme on a ride , Louis de Funès is officially received by the 405 It is anti-aircraft artillery regiment in Hyères, which makes it “first honor class” for services rendered to the national gendarmerie [ 47 ] , [ 48 ] . The , during the Ramatuelle Festival where Michel Galabru plays a play, a delegation of four gendarmes from the real Saint-Tropez brigade goes on stage after the performance, while the actor greets the public: they award the honorary title to him d ‘ “Warrant Officer of the National Gendarmerie” And give him a Képi from adjutant [ 49 ] , [ 50 ] . Moved, Michel Galabru declares with humor: “It is a glorious return to the past. Alas, we are only one or two survivors! And look in what state I am ” before concluding : “This honor, I receive it with great pleasure and I thank you infinitely” [ 49 ] , [ 50 ] .

The series of films is put forward during an exhibition devoted to audiovisual representations of the gendarmerie, at the National Gendarmerie Museum, in 2021 [ 51 ] .

The Saint-Tropez gendarme [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The former gendarmerie of Saint-Tropez which served as a decor for the first five films.

Thanks to the loyal services rendered to an unnamed municipality of the Hautes-Alpes [ 52 ] , [ 53 ] , where he was so far in office, Ludovic Cruchot, simple marshal of the gendarmerie houses, is transferred to the Var, in Saint-Tropez while being promoted marshal of the logis-chef.

Arrived at the scene of his new assignment, Cruchot participates in the vain and repetitive hunts with nudists organized by his superior, adjutant Gerber, while for his part his daughter Nicole, who was formerly bored to die in his village, is dazzled by the luxury of its new city. But, not being able to be accepted by the young bourgeois of the seaside resort, she invents a wealthy fictitious father: he would be a billionaire, would have a yacht in this city and would be called Archibald Ferguson, that she would never have met.

Constrained by Nicole and well in spite of himself, Cruchot will find himself at the heart of the merry -go -round of her daughter, who will mix him with his story and thereby, in search of a stolen rebellion (at the Annonciade Museum), when The latter’s friends will try to meet him. However, he will try and by all means to preserve his official identity intact in view of his adjutant and his colleagues.

The gendarme in New York [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The gendarmes of Saint-Tropez were chosen to represent France during an international gendarmerie congress in New York. After a trip to the ocean liner, they land in Manhattan. Soon, Cruchot believes to see her daughter Nicole everywhere … And for good reason: this one, eager to discover the “New World”, embarked on the ship as a clandestine passenger, without his father.
Being arrested by customs on her arrival, Nicole is approached by a journalist with whom she pretends to be an orphan eager to discover America. Moved, and thinking of drawing a beautiful article from this story, the journalist takes it under his wing.
Cruchot and its brigade discover New York, except Fougasse who, who fell ill during the crossing, was hospitalized and who will stay there until the end of the stay (they discover after several days of examination that he was the victim of an allergy to sea birds. And when he wants to join the others, he breaks his leg).

Everyone ends up believing that Cruchot is crazy and has hallucinations believing to see Nicole everywhere. He will even go so far as to consult a psychoanalyst. But soon, Cruchot ended up finding the trace of Nicole. He will then have all the sorrows of the world, especially with the American police who are looking for his daughter, to bring in her without goring and the others seeing her. Gerber will however discover the truth when they return to Saint-Tropez and promise Cruchot that it will cost him dearly.

The gendarme gets married [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The film begins a first is July, fateful and traditional date of big departure on vacation.

The Marshal of the Logis-Chef Cruchot is entrusted with a major mission in order to track down drivers and verbalize them. This operation will prove to be full of surprises and unexpected, in particular the one who ends the operation by pursuing a driver who does not care about the rules of the highway code and leading her Ford Mustang convertible with passion. This prosecution will end in front of the Saint-Tropez gendarmerie. The dapper widow of the Colonel de Gendarmerie Lefrançois, Josépha, is the intrepid conductive of the beautiful convertible. She comes to make herself known to the gendarmerie of the place of her summer stay. Welcomed very civilly by the Warrant Officer Gerber, the latter who must be temporarily absent. Cruchot arriving in the meantime, falls face to face with the “heating” whose identity he ignores and takes advantage of it to sermn it, then verbalize it. But on the return from his superior, which immediately became aware of his mistake, he will be put back very seriously in his place and will have to be very small in front of this superb woman with powerful relationships. The “love at first sight” immediately takes place, especially since Josépha is delighted to meet the very little girl of Cruchot, Nicole, who in reality will prove significantly greater …

Soon, she does not hesitate to push her new lover to take steps, encouraging him to prepare the chief warrant officer competition, with the complicity of Nicole. He will be subjected to a severe regime guarantor of an undeniable success, to the chagrin of the Warrant Officer Gerber who also targets advancement.
Cruchot wins the exam and is promoted to chief warrant officer at the Grand Regret de Gerber. But the reign of Cruchot will quickly end when we learn that there was an error in the results and it is Gerber who obtains the rank of chief warrant officer. He intends to take his revenge on Cruchot.

Meanwhile, Fredo Le Boucher, a dangerous bandit escapes (he had slipped into a dance class where Cruchot was to try to escape the gendarmes. Cruchot, not wanting to be seen by his men and not recognizing Not immediately the bandit, tries to escape with him but ends up helping his men to capture him). Eager to take revenge on Cruchot, he uses Josépha as bait to attract him but it is Gerber who answers the call following an error. Fredo then tries to run away to the border with Josépha as a hostage. Cruchot and sister Clotilde hunt it and succeeds in stopping it. At the end, Cruchot (also reached the rank of chief warrant officer) married Josépha at the same time as Nicole with one of her friends.

The gendarme on a ride [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

The Marshal of Logis Chef Cruchot was retired like all members of the brigade, replaced by a younger team with more modern methods.

Six months later, Cruchot is bored in retreating in his wife’s castle, however overflowing with attention to him to get him out of his gloom: horse riding, ultra sophisticated surveillance system of the property only obeying ‘At his orders, visit the parish priest … Nothing helps, even washing the car he claims.

During an unexpected visit, adjutant Gerber and his wife, taken initially for intruders, fall into an old forgetfulness thanks to the famous radar detection system offered by Josépha. CRUCHOT then shows to Gerber his museum-souvenir, they evoke their past by the gendarmerie of Saint-Tropez. Then they receive an old service man, the gendarme Merlot, who taught them that Fougasse has become amnesiac.

Also accompanied by their Tricard and Berlicot colleagues, they decide to go help their former comrade and make a pilgrimage to the sources. However, too excited about the idea of bringing the uniform again, the gendarmes come up in illegality, meet in spite of themselves the hippies, thwart an extremely dangerous children’s game and find this sympathetic and welcome complicity with the sisters whose Best driver (sister Clotilde) became a superior mother of the convent who became an orphanage. Despite the fierce hunt for their successors, they will shine once again. Thus ridiculed, the “new” will have to make room for their elders, too happy to take over their post of gendarmes from Saint-Tropez and to receive a deserved tribute.

The members of the Saint-Tropez gendarmerie brigade fall from the clouds when they meet their doubles after the other, in the form of extraterrestrials saying peaceful. The arrival of a flying saucer, the emotion she triggers and the fear of the unknown will bring the press of the whole world to the small seaside locality. But how can we recognize the real gendarmes of the false? How to recognize the humans of the extraterrestrials who take the appearance of everyone? Cruchot and his colleagues will discover that these extraterrestrials are made of metal, that they “sound hollow” when they are hit and that they drink oil …

The first gendarme to see the saucer is a new man named Beaupied but nobody takes him seriously … until Cruchot does it in turn and that extraterrestrials come into contact with him to state their allegedly peaceful intentions.

Cruchot Moleste Gerber and the Colonel by taking them for extraterrestrials and is put at stops. He escapes and begins to track down the extraterrestrials and seek proof of their existence to present to his superiors. This hunt and the misunderstandings that she induces attract the wrath of Josépha.

Finally, the gendarmes discover the weakness of the extraterrestrials: they rust in contact with the water. They tend them a trap with a false saucer as a bait. The gendarmes must then face their doubles and put them on the run … But, during the final parade, the “rusty” gendarmes fall to the ground like out-service machines: they were the extraterrestrials. The real gendarmes appear in the saucer which ends up falling at sea, fortunately without damage to its occupants. The Cruchot-Josépha couple are reconciled.

The gendarme and the gendarmettes [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

In its brand new premises, the Saint-Tropez brigade, having acquired a computer so powerful that it answers all questions, is responsible for welcoming, taking care and forming a contingent of four young women in uniform. A specialist in computer espionage takes away, one after the other, the new recruits. The existence of the brigade being endangered by these kidnappings whose reason seems inexplicable, our gendarmes will deploy in the danger of their lives, treasures of ingenuity to find these women whose custody they had.
