The iOS SDK ( iOS Software Development Kit ), formerly iPhone SDK , is a software development kit (SDK) developed by Apple Inc. The kit allows the development of mobile applications on Apple iOS and iPados operating systems.

The IOS SDK is for free download for Macintosh (or Mac) personal computers. It is not available for Microsoft Windows PCs. The SDK contains sets allowing developers to access various functions and services of iOS devices, such as hardware and software attributes. It also contains an iPhone phenomena simulator to imitate the appearance of the device on the computer during development. New versions of the SDK accompany the new versions of iOS. In order to test applications, obtain technical assistance and distribute applications via the App Store, developers must subscribe to the program for Apple developers.

Combined with XCODE, IOS SDK helps developers writing iOS applications using officially supported programming languages, including Swift and Objective-C. Other companies have also created tools allowing the development of iOS native applications using their respective programming languages.

While it originally developed the iPhone before its unveiling in 2007, Apple Steve Jobs CEO first does not intend to let third party developers create native applications for the operating system iOS, rather asking them to create web applications for the Safari web browser [ first ] . However, the upgrading of developers encourages the company to reconsider this decision, Steve Jobs announcing on October 17, 2007 that Apple would have a software development kit (SDK) available for developers by February 2008 [ 2 ] , [ 3 ] . The SDK is published on March 6, 2008 [ 4 ] , [ 5 ] .

IOS SDK is free download for Mac users [ 6 ] . It is not available for Microsoft Windows personal computers [ 6 ] . To test the application, obtain technical assistance and distribute applications via the App Store, the developers must subscribe to the program for developers named Apple Developers [ 6 ] .

The SDK also contains an iPhone simulator, a program used to simulate the appearance of the iPhone on the computer of the developer [ 7 ] .
