J. Farrell MacDonald is an American actor and director, of his full name Joseph Farrell MacDonald , born in Waterbury (Connecticut) the , died in Hollywood (California) the .

J. Farrell Macdonald is the director of 43 American films, mainly short films, between 1912 and 1917, therefore exclusively during the Mute period. Among them, three were made in 1914 on behalf of the ephemeral production company The Oz Film Manufacturing Company (in) , one of the founders of which is Lyman Frank Baum, the author of the novel The Wizard of Oz .

As an actor, J. Farrell Macdonald began in the cinema in 1911 and appeared in more than 300 American films (including more than 100 silent films) until 1951. In particular, he participated in 26 films (notably 14 muets and 2 partially sounded) Made by John Ford: in the penultimate ( The infernal pursuit , in 1946), he performed one of his best -known roles, that of ‘Mac’, the old bartender.
