Jean-Luc vote (1982 in Charleroi) is a Belgian clarinetist. He is solo clarinet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, concertist and teaches at IMEP in Namur.

Born in 1982, Jean-Luc Votano learned the clarinet from the age of 4 with Giovanni Votano, his father. He then continued his studies at the Conservatories of Versailles and Mons. In 2002, at the age of 20, he joined the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège as the first solo clarinet and became a clarinet teacher at the Higher Music Institute and Pedagogy (IMEP) in Namur. Elected “best young soloist of 2004” by French -speaking public radios and several times nominated for the “Octave de la Musique”, he was the winner of many international competitions.

Since the age of seven, he has been pursuing a concert career in parallel and has played in particular under the direction of prestigious leaders such as Armin Jordan, Louis Langrée, Christian Arming, Yoel Lévy, Yuri Simonov or Pascal Rophé. His passion for chamber music also allows him to practice his art with partners such as Martha Argerich, Michel Dalberto, Nicolas Angelich, François-René Duchâble, Karine Deshayes, Sophie Karthäuser, Jodie Devos, Henri Demarquette, Marie Hallynck, Arnaud Thorette , Boris Belkin, Albrecht-Laurent Breuninger, Geneviève Laurenceau, the Quartets Debussy, Danel, Parisii and the Fine Arts Quartet. Since 2007, he has been a member of the Trio of A reeds Abocalips and in 2010, he joined the whole contrast.

In 2006, Jean-Luc Votano made his debut in New York, Lincoln Center, while in , he is invited by the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra of Tokyo for the Japanese creation of the Concerto for Magnus Lindberg clarinet. His repertoire includes a hundred concertos and room music and several major partitions of the contemporary repertoire. Composers such as Claude Ledoux, Johan Farjot, Robert Janssens, Max Vandermaesbrugges, Viviane Mataigne and Stéphane Orlando also dedicated some of their works to him.

His discography includes in particular concerted pieces from Mozart, Weber and Rossini with the OPRL and Louis Langrée (Cypress), the integral for Bruch clarinet and viola with Arnaud Thorette, Johan Farjot and Pascal Rophé (Cypress/Diapason d’or) , the integral of the works for Schumann clarinet with the whole contrast (cypress), Mozart Vibration (Héliotrope) and Kiss Me a lot released in , with the whole contrast and the OPRL (aside). She will soon be enriched by Clarinets at work A disc around the Italian opera with the “IMEP Namur CLARINET CHOIR”, Philippe CUPER and CALOGERO Palermo (Cypress).

In 2019, he won the gold tuning for the year for his disc “Contemporary Clarinet Concertos” (Fuga Libera), in the “Music of today” category.
