Jean-Philippe Dallaire , born the in the Hull sector, in the city of Gatineau in Quebec, Canada and died In Vence, France, is a Quebec cubist painter artist.

Jean Dallaire was born in Hull in Quebec, Canada, the [ first ] . He started drawing at the age of 11 [ 2 ] . He studied primary school and commercial lesson in Hull [ 3 ] .

In 1936, Georges-Henri Lévesque invited him to the Dominican monastery in Ottawa; He installs his studio there and produced a wall for the chapel. In 1938, he attended the Montreal Fine Arts School for six months. He married Marie-Thérèse Ayotte d’Ottawa. He receives a Quebec government scholarship to go to work in Paris with Maurice Denis and André Lhote; Then he has his workshop on rue de Vaugirard.

In 1940, during the Second World War, he was taken prisoner for the Germans for four years. In prison, he studied drawing and Italian [ 2 ] . In 1944, he initiated the tapestry techniques. A year later, he exhibited at the gallery of the Maison des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

In 1946, he was appointed professor of painting and drawing at the School of Fine Arts in Quebec; He taught there until 1952 [ 2 ] . Then, he worked in Ottawa for the Canada National Film Office until 1957.

In 1957, he moved to Montreal. In 1959, he returned to France, in Paris and then in Vence [ 4 ] .

Dallaire was an admirer of the work of Alfred Pellan. In 1940, in a letter addressed to his friend, the sculptor Hullois Henri Heyendahl, Dallaire said of the painter: “Pellan taught me more than any other. »»

Journalist Georges-E. Carrière described Jean Dallaire in these words in 1971: “Dallaire was a demanding artist, meticulous to the extreme and left no detail at random. »» [ 5 ] .

Several municipalities in Quebec have appointed a street with its name including Laval (Sainte-Rose district) [ 45 ] , Blainville [ forty six ] and Saint-Lin-Laurentides [ 47 ] . In Gatineau, a street [ 48 ] and a public park [ 49 ] bear his name.

On the occasion of the Centth anniversary of birth of the artist in 2016, the Galerie Montcalm de Gatineau presented a monographic exhibition entitled Tribute to Dallaire: How the party begins! [ 50 ] . In addition, community organizations and several businesses joined the city of Gatineau to offer around forty activities that have highlighted the painter’s works [ 51 ] .
