Jerrold Lewis « Jerry » Bock is a composer of American musicals, born in New Haven, Connecticut, the , and dead the [ 2 ] , [ 3 ] . He is notably known for his collaborations with Sheldon Harnick whose A roof violin .

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Jerry Bock grew up in Flushing, Queens, New York. Child, he studies the piano. He frequented the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he wrote the music of the musical Big As Life , which is the subject of a state tour and is represented Chicago. After his studies, he spent three summers at the Tamiment Playhouse in the Poconos and wrote for television journals with the lyricist Larry Holofcener.

He made his debut in Broadway in 1955 when he and Lawrence Holofcener contribute to the songs of Catch a Star . The following year, the duo collaborated in the musical Mr. Wonderful , written for Sammy Davis, Jr .. After which, they work on Ziegfeld Follies de 1956 .

Shortly after, Bock meets the shelter Sheldon Harnick, with whom he concluded a partnership. Although their first try, The Body Beautiful , do not convince criticism, the score attracts the attention of director George Abbott and producer Hal Prince. They write a musical biography of the former mayor of New York Fiorello La Guardia. Fiorello! (1959) Win both the Tony Award for the best musical and the Pulitzer Prize for the theater.

Other collaborations between Bock and Harnick concern Tenderloin (1960), Man in the Moon (1963), She Loves Me (1963), Fiddler on the Roof (1964), The Apple Tree (1966), and The Rothschilds (1970), as well as contributions to Never Too Late (1962), Baker Street (1965), Her First Roman (1968), and The Madwoman of Central Park West (1979). Fiddler on the Roof is famous for his song “If I Were a Rich Man”.

Bock died of heart failure at the age of 81, four weeks before his 82 It is anniversary.
