The European Cinematographic Prize of the Public (or PRIX LUX ) is a cinematographic prize awarded by the European Parliament and the European Cinema Academy, which aims to encourage European creativity in its diversity.

Awarded by a public vote and European deputies, the Lux Prize rewards works that participate in the European public debate. It is awarded in partnership with the European Commission and the network of Europa Cinemas.

The nominated films are subtitled in the 24 official languages of the European Union, and free projections are organized in all the Member States. The winning film is the subject of a promotion campaign across the European Union, and obtains an adaptation for deaf or hard of hearing [ first ] , [ 2 ] . The Lux Prize is awarded by the president of the European Parliament in plenary session in Strasbourg.

Since 2020, the Lux Prize has merged with the public prize of the European Academy of Cinema, and allows the public to vote directly to elect the winning film [ 3 ] .

The selected films must meet the following criteria:

  • cinematographic works of fiction or animation or creation documentaries;
  • minimum duration of 60 minutes;
  • Covering various themes, promoting and encouraging public debate on daily newspapers in Europe and the future of it. The diversity of registers, themes and genres is encouraged;
  • resulting from productions or co-productions of countries eligible for the European creative-media program (European Union, Iceland, Albania, Norway, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro);
  • projected for the first time in public (festival, cinema or online) between the first is September of the current year and September 1 of the following year.

Each year, five films are in the official selection of the Lux Prize. This list is stopped by a jury made up of representatives of the European cinema industry: producers, distributors, cinema operators, directors or programmers of festivals, film critics and a representative of the winning film of the previous year. Renewed every year by third party, members of the selection panel are appointed by the European Culture and Education Commission of the European Parliament [ 4 ] . Jury’s decisions are adopted by consensus.

The list of films in competition is presented each year at European cinema prices.

The voting of the Lux price is made up of the public votes for half, and the other half by the votes of deputies of the European Parliament. Each year the public is invited to view films in cinema and on online platforms, then invited to vote on the Lux Prix website. The film having obtained the greatest number of votes is declared victorious [ 5 ] .

Before 2020, only European deputies were empowered to vote to designate the winning film.

Since 2020, five films have been theoretically in competition for the awarding of the Lux Prize. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, only three films were selected for 2021 and 2022 editions [ 17 ] .
