Marvel Studios is the property of The Walt Disney Company. The films that are part of this shared universe are, originally, those showcase the Avengers, a group of superheroes comprising Iron Man , Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Captain America. Released in 2008, this is the film Iron Man who launches this universe and therefore, the first phase, which will end with the exit from Avengers in 2012 [ first ] . The second phase begins with the release of Iron Man 3 in 2013 and ended with Ant-Man in 2015. The third phase, on the other hand, began during the exit of Captain America: Civil War in 2016, and ended in 2019 with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home . The first three phases of this universe form a narrative arch known as The saga of L’Efini ( The Infinity Saga a version original). The fourth phase began in 2021 with the broadcast of the series WandaVision On Disney+. It starts the second “cycle” of the universe, entitled The multiverse saga ( The Multiverse Saga In the original version), and which will include the following phases. This second “cycle”, which was to open originally in 2020 with Black Widow , was affected by the Pandemic of Covid-19 and the postponement of the film. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4The film The guards of the galaxy , released in August 2014 , is the first in which the Avengers do not appear, and almost all come together in 2018 and 2019 in Avengers: Infinity War followed by Avengers: Endgame , which becomes the most lucrative superhero film in the history of world cinema with recipes exceeding 2.798 billion dollars. The creation of a filmic universe is akin to what Stan Lee proposed in comics , where the characters can appear in other series than theirs. With the concept of extended universes, Marvel cinematographic productions have staged, under the leadership of producer Kevin Feige, a large gallery of characters and participated in making the kind of superhero super-hero films more popular [ 2 ] . In February 2023 , Thirty -one films were released indoors, accumulating more than $ 27.450 billion in global revenue and partly constituting the first three “phases” of the construction of this universe, with a final production, Avengers: Endgame which concludes the first “cycle” called The saga of L’Efini linked to the six infinite stones and Thanos which were the guiding thread of many films of these first three phases of the MCU [ 3 ] . Previously, the studio had many co-production contracts for superhero films with Columbia Pictures, New Line Cinema and in particular a 7-year contract with the 20th Century Fox [ 5 ] . However, Marvel Studios has only benefited from these financial arrangements and sought to increase her recipes while maintaining the artistic control of projects [ 6 ] . Kevin Feige is the one who imagined the development of the franchise, realizing that Marvel could create a filmic universe from the licenses of which he had the rights. The co-president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, then realized that if he did not entirely have the production rights of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, whose licenses were co-led respectively by Columbia for Spider-Man, and Fox For the fantastic four and the X-Men, Marvel still had the rights for the central members of the Avengers (or Avengers in the original version). Feige then imagined realizing his fan dream by creating a shared universe like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had done it in the comics In the early 1960s [ 7 ] . In order to ensure departure capital, the studio ensured credit funding of $ 525 million over 7 years with Merrill Lynch [ 6 ] . The idea was therefore to first produce a film on each hero before bringing them together in a film crossover [ 8 ] . In 2007, when he was only 33, Feige was appointed president of Marvel Studios. In order to preserve its artistic integrity, the studio has formed a creative committee made up of six familiar people with comics: Feige, president of Marvel Studios, Louis d’Esposito, president of the Marvel Comics publishing, Dan Buckley, Director of the Creation of Marvel, Joe Quesada, the writer Brian Michael Bendis and the president of Marvel Entertainment, Alan Fine. In November 2013 , Feige declares that in “An ideal world” , the annual film releases would include a film based on an existing character and another on a new character, which he said would be “A good rhythm” . This was not always the case, as in 2013 when the two productions are following ( Iron Man 3 And Thor: The world of darkness ), to which he replied that it remained “Certainly a goal to be achieved” [ 9 ] . Feige returned to his idea in July 2014 : “I don’t know if we will stay [on this model] each Year, but we stay on it for 2014 and 2015. So I think it would be good to continue these kinds of things. I do not know if we [the] will do all the time, but in a global setting, I think it would be good [ ten ] . » In February 2014 , Feige says that Marvel Studios wants to reproduce the “rhythm” that the comic books have developed, having the characters in their own films before meeting in event films [ 11 ] with movies Avengers as pillars [ twelfth ] . After the revelation of the exit dates of the phase III Until 2019 [ 13 ] , Feige said: “I think that if you look at some of these dates announced, we arrive at three dates per year for some. Again, not because there is an imperative that forces us to go to three, make more than two films in a year, but for a simple development reason: it is a question of managing franchises [existing ], film after film, and when we have a team ready to work, why tell them to wait for four years just because we do not have a niche? We prefer to find a way to maintain the pace [ 14 ] . » When the titles are revealed in 2014 [ 15 ] , he adds : “The studio is at full speed at the moment … which has made our lives easier for the first time … to move on to three films per year [in 2017, 2018 and 2019] instead of two, without changing our methods [ 16 ] . » With the increase in the number of characters in the universe and letting individual films breathe and having their own story, and instead of having avengers meetings outside these films, Feige said that he act of “Remember the most spectators to the greatest number that the characters exist separately, gathering only for specific events and set off again and exist separately in their own worlds again. Just as comics readers have done for decades and decades … People are somehow accepting that there is a good time when they must be together and there is a time when they do not can’t [ 17 ] . » In April 2014 , Feige reveals that the script written by Edgar Wright for Ant-Man In 2006, helped design the first MCU films [ 18 ] . In October 2014 , Marvel held a press conference to announce the titles of the films of the phase III [ 15 ] Once everything had been decided, which forced to repel the announcement several times [ 16 ] . The February 10, 2015 , Disney-Marvel and Sony Pictures reached an agreement to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematographic universe with a film planned in 2017 but by rejecting four films [ 19 ] , [ 20 ] , [ 21 ] . In September of the same year, after the attachment of Marvel Studios to the Walt Disney Studios, the studios creation committee had a “nominal” contribution on the films to come, although the two studios continued to consult the productions of Marvel Television , who remained under the direction of Perlmutter. All key decisions concerning future films were to be made by Feige, Esposito and Victoria Alonso. At the end of the month, with the quantity of history developed for future franchise films, Feige that only “main lines” appeared, although sometimes we found “specific elements”. The studio also had various emergency plans in its possession of all their films, in the event that they are unable to obtain a certain actor to use a role, or reactivate the rights of the film on a certain character, as was the case in February 2015 With Spider-Man. In April 2016 , by developing the universe towards phase four and thinking about the first three, Feige said: “I think there will be an end after the events of phase three, as well as new beginnings that will mark another departure” . Joe Russo added: “We build things and people appreciate the accumulated experiences. But then, we somehow reach a summit, a moment when we will say that this structure will start to be repetitive if we start again, whereas we do now? So we deconstruct him. We are in the deconstruction phase with Captain America: Civil War , Then Avengers: Infinity War , which are culminating films ”. A year later, Feige considered that after the conclusion of phase three, Marvel could abandon the grouping of films by phases, explaining: “This could lead to the creation of a new project”. He also mentioned that Avengers: Endgame would form “a conclusion” to the films and the scenarios which precede it, the franchise having “two distinct periods: the pre- Endgame and the post- Endgame ». Regarding the potential “superhero fatigue”, Feige said: “In this year 2016, we have the outings of Captain America: Civil War and of Doctor Strange In November, two completely different films. For me, and for all Marvel studios, that’s what makes things get forward. As long as we surprise people, as long as we do not fall into similarity … next year will also be marked by the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , Spider-Man: Homecoming And Thor: Ragnarok . These are three totally different films … With the difference that they come from the same source material and that they have our Marvel logo in front of the films. Other than that, they are very distinct ”. The December 14, 2017 , Disney announces that it will buy the 21st Century Fox. This acquisition thus includes the studios 20th Century Fox, which until then had the adaptation rights of the characters of the X-Men films (including Wolverine and Deadpool) and films on the Fantastic Four [ 22 ] . Therefore all these characters can now be operated by Marvel Studios and if necessary join the MCU if Marvel Studios decides [ 23 ] . The acquisition is negotiated in June 2018 , after an offer of 71.3 billion USD to counter a comcast proposal at 65 billion USD [ 24 ] , then officially concluded the 19 mars 2019 [ 25 ] . In July 2019 , Feige announced the planning of phase four at the Comic-Con de San Diego, this being made up of films and series broadcast on Disney+. Additional Disney+ series for phase four were announced at J23 the following month. In December 2020 , During the Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios revealed updates concerning films and series announced during the year, in addition to series and special episodes for the platform, many of which were attached to phase four. Film distribution rights [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Over time, the distribution rights of Marvel Studios films have changed their hands several times. In November 2006 , Universal Pictures announces that it will distribute The incredible hulk [ 26 ] , an arrangement that separates him from the 2005 contract passed between Marvel and Paramount, the distributor of other films [ 4 ] . In September 2008 , after the international success of Iron Man , Paramount signs a contract for the global distribution of future productions, namely Iron Man 2 , Iron Man 3 , Thor , Captain America : First Avenger And Avengers [ 27 ] . But end December 2009 , The Walt Disney Company buys Marvel Entertainment for $ 4 billion. In October 2010 , Walt Disney Studios bought the distribution rights of Avengers And Iron Man 3 in Paramount Pictures [ 28 ] , while letting the logo of the paramount appear in the credits and on promotional posters [ 29 ] , [ 30 ] (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures remains the only studio credited at the end of these films [ thirty first ] ). Disney has distributed since only Marvel Studios films [ 32 ] . In July 2013 , Disney buys the distribution rights of Iron Man , Iron Man 2 , Thor And Captain America: First Avenger in paramount [ 33 ] . The film The incredible hulk Stay apart, Marvel and Universal having an arrangement where the first has the rights of the film and the second has distribution rights, as well as for any Hulk film to produce [ 34 ] . In February 2015 , Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announce an arrangement around the Spider-Man license, allowing the character to appear in the MCU, his first appearance will be in Captain America: Civil War [ 35 ] , [ 36 ] . Likewise, Marvel Studios studies the possibility for characters from the MCU to appear in films Spider-Man funded, distributed and controlled by Sony Pictures [ 35 ] . This occurs for the first time with the integration of Robert Downey Jr. within Spider-Man: Homecoming . In June of the same year, Feige said that the initial agreement with Sony would not apply to any MCU television series. The two studios also have the opportunity to terminate the agreement at any time. However, a small adjustment was brought to a 2011 agreement concluded between the two studios (where Marvel obtained total control of the Spider-Man merchandering rights, in exchange for a single payment of $ 175 million in Sony) , Marvel having the possibility of reducing its $ 35 million payment to Sony if Spider-Man: Homecoming were to bring back more than $ 750 million. In August 2019 , it is announced that Disney and Sony could not reach a new agreement concerning Spider-Man films, Marvel Studios and Feige having declared that he no longer was involved in future films. Deadline Hollywood reported that Disney had hoped that future films would be a “50/50 co-financing arrangement between studios”, with the possibility of extending the agreement to other films related to Spider-Man, an offer that Sony rejected . Instead, Sony hoped to maintain the terms of the previous agreement (Marvel receiving 5% of the film’s first crude dollar), but Disney refused. The Hollywood Reporter Added that the absence of a new agreement would mark the end of Spider-Man in the MCU. Or, in September 2019 , it was announced that Disney and Sony had entered into a new agreement allowing Spider-Man to appear in the rest of Spider-Man: Far From Home . Disney would have co-funded 25% of the film in exchange for 25% of the profits, while retaining merchandising rights on the character. Feige noted that, while Sony continued to build his own shared universe separately, it was possible that this version of Spider-Man could appear in this universe. In October 2020 , Jamie Foxx was chosen to resume her role as electro, which appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man: The fate of a hero , in the third film Spider-Man MCU. In December, it is announced that Alfred Molina and Kirsten Dunst should resume their respective roles of Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus and Mary Jane Watson of the film trilogy Spider-Man de sam raimi [ 37 ] , [ 38 ] , with, in addition, the return of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker / Spider-Man from The Amazing Spider-Man by Marc Webb. Emma Stone should also come back as Gwen Stacy, while Tobey Maguire would be in talks to return as Peter Parker of Sam Raimi films [ 38 ] . TV shows [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Disney+ [ modifier | Modifier and code ] In December 2017 , Disney undertakes to develop new Marvel television series for its Disney+ streaming service [ 39 ] . In July 2018 , Kevin Feige announced that discussions had started with Disney concerning any potential involvement that Marvel Studios could have with the streaming service, since Feige estimated that the platform was “an important element for the company” [ 40 ] . In September 2018 , it was confirmed that Marvel Studios developed several series centered on secondary characters from the MCU films which were unlikely to have their own film. Each series was to count between six and eight episodes and each would be produced by Marvel Studios instead of Marvel Television, Feige playing a “practical role” in the development of each series [ 41 ] . In addition, the latter said that the series under development “would tell stories too developed to be adapted in film” [ 42 ] . He also added that Disney wish to develop Marvel series in order to “energize creativity” within Marvel Studios, since they were offered to work in a completely different environment [ 43 ] . In July 2019 , during the San Diego Comic-Con, several Marvel series were announced: Falcon and the winter soldier , WandaVision , Loki , the animated series What If …? as well as Hawkeye , all being part of the phase IV [ 44 ] . Three additional Disney+ series were announced at D23 the following month: Ms. Marvel , Moon Knight And She-Hulk [ 45 ] . It was specified that the budget of each series would be between $ 100 and $ 150 million [ forty six ] . In September 2020 , the development of a series centered on Nick Fury was announced, under the name Secret Invasion [ 47 ] . In December 2020 , on the occasion of Disney investor day, the series Ironheart , Armor Wars And I am tall were announced, in addition to a special Christmas episode focused on the Galaxy Guardians, named The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special [ 48 ] . It has been confirmed that all these series are part of the phase IV [ 49 ] . In February 2021 , Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther , announced that a series dedicated to Wakanda was under development [ 50 ] . In September 2022, the project Armor Wars is reworked to become a film project, always with Don Cheadle as a main role and Yassir Lester as a screenwriter [ 51 ] . Other visual productions [ modifier | Modifier and code ] The first comic strip linked to the MCU was released in 2008 [ 52 ] . Joe Quesada described his expansion plan from the universe to the comics by declaring: “These are stories taking place in the continuity of the films. These are not necessarily direct adaptations of the films, but perhaps something that happened off screen and which was mentioned in the film … Kevin Feige is involved in this project and in some cases, perhaps that the scriptwriters of the films would also be ” [ 53 ] . Marvel Comics worked with Brad Winderbaum, Jeremy Latcham and Will Corona Pilgrim in the Marvel studios to decide the concepts that should be addressed, what should be shown in comics, and what should be left to films [ 54 ] . Marvel said which comics would be considered canonical stories of the MCU, the rest being simply inspired by films [ 55 ] . In August 2011 , Marvel announced The unique Marvel editions ( Marvel One-shots in VO), which are short films published in direct-to-video Content in Blu-ray editions of films in the Marvel cinematic universe [ 56 ] . They put secondary characters from the films, living a story independently of the Avengers. The consultant ( The Consultant ): Included in the blu-ray of Thor . He tells how Coulson and Sitwell agents made Tony Stark visit General Ross in the post-generic scene of The incredible hulk . Peter does several things from his race list such as looking for his passport, buy a catch adapter or even put an end to the activities of a mafia group. In mars 2015 , Vice-President of Marvel Development and Production Production, Cort Lane, said that animated links with the MCU were “in preparation” [ 57 ] . In July, Marvel Studios teamed up with Google to produce the program of false information named WHIH: New Front (or WHIH: World News ) [ 58 ] . This is a false information channel available on YouTube for free, with two seasons, each of 5 episodes. This program serves as an introduction to different films. The first season talks about the hacking of the company where Scott Lang worked, and the company Pym Technologies (preparing Ant-Man ). The second season talks about the Sokovie agreements, the Wakanda disaster, the events reported in Avengers: Ultron era , and the rebellion of Steve Rogers (seen in Captain America: Civil War ). It deals with the importance and impact of superhero in the world. In December 2016 , the website Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Slingshot is broadcast. This is a series derived from the television series Shield agents And she focuses on the character of Elena Rodriguez, known as Yo-Yo. Online in December 2016 , she has a season of 6 episodes, telling an adventure taking place between seasons 3 and 4 of the series while the Sokovia agreements begin to be written. In September 2019 Sony has created a real version of the fictitious site Thossailybigle.net as part of a marketing campaign to promote Spider-Man: Far From Home . Inspired by real websites “that push for the plot”, like that of Alex Jones, the site presents J.K. Simmons taking up his role as J. Jonah Jameson in a video where he denounces Spider-Man, before adding “Thank you ‘Having looked at. Do not forget to love and subscribe! »» [ 59 ] . In December 2020 , Marvel Studios has announced I am tall , a series of short films featuring the character of Baby Groot for Disney+ [ 60 ] , as well as Legends of Marvel studios , a documentary devoted to the characters of the MCU [ sixty one ] . Business practices [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Marvel Studios has developed specific commercial practices to create its shared universe, in particular by choosing recognized directors taking into account their previous work. Feige pointed out: “It is not necessary to have made a film filled with special effects to make a big film. You just have to have done something singularly great ” [ 62 ] , adding: “It worked well for us when we hired people like Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, Kenneth Branagh and the Russo brothers, who did very good things. It is very rare that a superhero film is part of the striking films category ” [ 63 ] . The studio was therefore looking for filmmakers to hire capable of making a film [ sixty four ] . During the hiring of the latter, the studio generally has “an kernel of an idea of what he wants”, which is presented to the potential directors during several meetings to discuss the development of the film. “And if in three, four or five meetings, they succeed much better than what we announce to them, they generally get the post,” according to Feige [ sixty four ] . Later, while developing this process, Feige explained that before talking about a film for directors, Marvel Studios often prepares a lookbook , influences from comics by the Marvel visual development department, to create a visual model for the film. These are gathered during meetings that the studio organizes every 18 months approximately to plan and develop the phases of the MCU. However, these lookbooks are not always shown to directors, Marvel sometimes preferring to let the director offer his own ideas first [ 65 ] . When developing Doctor Strange , Scott Derrickson did not benefit from a lookbook , but rather revealed his true conception of the film, with concept art and storyboards which he had himself made with his team. On the other hand, Marvel shared several different ideas on what Thor: Ragnarok could look like some directors. For this, Taika Waititi created a freezing coil using clips from other films to present her vision based on Marvel’s ideas, a practice that Marvel has advised because she “can often be catastrophic”. However, Derrickson and Waititi were both hired to make the films [ 65 ] . For Captain America: the winter soldier , Anthony and Joe Russo met the studio four times in two months before their hiring, during which they “continued to be more and more precise on their vision”, setting up presentation videos, storyboards, pages script. “We have validated a 30 -page book containing everything we would do with the character, from the theme of the film to his tone, including the combat style” [ 66 ] . When the studio hired Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston to make respectively Thor And Captain America: First Avenger , he made sure that the two directors were open to the idea of a shared universe and the inclusion of scenes from the assembly of Avengers In their films [ sixty seven ] . Joe Russo said: “It’s a very exciting element. What can we set up for the future? We are constantly offered ideas that affect not only our film, but which can also have an influence on other films ” [ 63 ] . His brother Anthony added: “What is great about the Marvel cinematographic universe is that he is in a very large and interconnected universe, where the characters will know their ascent and their fall, so to speak. As we advance, we can start to see that the franchise adopts the same model, as in the comics, where there is a conclusion with certain characters and a beginning with other characters ” [ 68 ] . He added that, so that the directors “integrate” in Marvel, they must understand how to “interpret a broader story and transform it into a unique moment”, while keeping it connected to other films [ 63 ] . By allowing directors and writers to work in the concept of shared universe, Joe Russo said that Feige has “great ideas on which to work, but the way you manage is a bit open to interpretation and ‘improvisation ”. When writing Captain America: the winter soldier , the Russo brothers had to face the idea that the Shield is infiltrated by Hydra, Joe saying: “The way necessary to get there depends on us. And I think that the reason why Marvel was so successful is that it was a clear plan, that everything is interconnected and that they build emotional capital with each film ” [ 69 ] . Later, he explained that once the creative team of each film found a concept, she “asks questions to know if that would interfere with the script in another film. Or what happens in a certain film, can it integrate a certain part in the film it designs? This is where you start to seek interdependence, but it is very important that the concept is created from the start, because you have to protect the idea ” [ 66 ] . LOEB explained that Marvel Television considers itself “as a producer company working to support the vision of showrunners. But we are involved in all aspects of production – whether with the writers, the assembly on the set, the cast – each stage of the production goes through the Marvel team to tell the best possible story. ” He added that the studio is capable of working on different series for several services, because “it simply requires that we understood that there is always someone familiar with the environment to direct production” [ 70 ] . Marvel Studios has also started to initiate its actors for several films, notably with Samuel L. Jackson, who signed a nine films contract [ 71 ] . In July 2014 , Feige said that the studio had all the actors of contracts sign for several films, the standard being for 3 or more, while contracts for 9 or 12 films are “rarer” [ 72 ] . The contracts with the actors also include clauses which allow Marvel to use up to three minutes of the performance of a film actor for another production, which the studio describes as a “transitional material” [ seventy three ] . At Marvel Television, actors such as Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock / Daredevil in Daredevil ) and Adrianne Palickki (Bobbi Morse / Mocking Bird in Shield agents ) are contractually forced to appear in a Marvel film if asked [ 74 ] . In May 2015 , after playing the role of Claire Temple in the first season of Daredevil , Rosario Dawson signed with Marvel to return in the second season of the series as part of an “exclusive television agreement” which also allows him to appear in any other Marvel series in Netflix [ 75 ] . The character of Dawson was also present in all the other series of Netflix, with the exception of The Punisher , connecting it in the same way as the character of Nick Fury of Jackson in the films [ 76 ] . In August 2012 , Marvel has signed an exclusive contract with Joss Whedon to June 2015 For cinema and television. In this way, Whedon “would contribute in a creative way” in phase two of the MCU and would develop the first television series linked to the universe [ 77 ] . In mars 2013 , Whedon has widened his responsibilities as a consultant, declaring: “I understand what Kevin Feige wants to do and where he heads, I read the scripts, I speak to directors and writers, I give my opinion. Sometimes there can be writing. But I don’t try to change things, I’m just trying to be useful ” [ 78 ] . Later, he also explained that “since history has already been approved and everyone knows what we are doing with Avengers 2 , we can really expose it. It’s not like someone said: “Well, I don’t know, and if I need it?”. You want to honor the events of the last film, but you don’t want to be indebted to them, because some people will see Avengers 2 will not have seen any of the intermediate films or even Avengers 1 » . He also found that work on television and writing scenarios were “an excellent training field to manage this, because we give you a lot of pieces and we tell you to adapt them, even if it is difficult »» [ 79 ] . When the Russo brothers and the scriptwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely worked on Avengers: Infinity War And the three phase in general, they saw “a guideline, of the Winter soldier , Passing by Civil War , until Infinity War », With films like Doctor Strange And Thor: Ragnarok lay the foundations of the “culminating point” of Infinity War . In April 2017 , with the announcement of his return to write and realize The guards of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , James Gunn revealed that he was working with Marvel “to help to conceive of these stories, and to also ensure that the Cosmic future of Marvel was as special, authentic and magical” [ 82 ] .
