There is the saying that the Orientals are good at copying: confirms in the athletics calendar to Seoul games. The Koreans resumed equal to the program of games of four years earlier.
Practically the difference compared to 1984 is only the date in the calendar:
- In racing the program is identical;
- In the march, the only difference is that the 50 km take place five days later (and you are not) the race on the 20 km;
- In competitions, the upper jump is back by six days. It was from Rome 1960 that it was not played in the first part of the program. The weight is mocked by eight. The number of gold assigned in the first part of the program rises from 10 to 12; The golds assigned in the second part descend from 14 to 12.
The two world records are, by definition, also Olympic records.

- Statistics
Of the 20 Olympic winners of the individual races of Los Angeles (Carl Lewis triumphed out of 100, 200 meters and in the long run), only four have left the competitive activity. But three Olympians were not selected by their respective nationals (Sebastian Coe, Pierre Quinon and Julius Korir) and at Joyner did not pass the US selections. Finally Saïd Aouita, champion of the 5000 meters, reappears on other distances. Of the remaining eleven Olympic champions, only two are reconfirmed: Lewis himself (100 meters and long) and Roger Kingdom (110 obstacles).
There are only three world record players who win their race in Seoul: Sergej Bubka (jump with the auction), Ulf Timmermann (weight jet) and Jürgen Schult (disc launch).
In 1987 the world athletic championships were held in Rome. Of the 21 champions of individual races (Carl Lews triumphed on 100 meters and long jump) fifteen show up in Seoul to attempt the combination with Olympic gold. Only five succeed: Lewis himself (both on the 100 and long), Bubka (auction), Markov (triple), Schult (disco) and Litvinov (hammer).
Edwin Moses (400 m obstacles) is the only one who presents himself in the guise of Olympic champion in charge, world champion and world record holder. This time he cannot confirm himself.
