The municipal library was installed in 1803 in the old Carmelite chapel, built in the last third of the XVII It is century [ 2 ] . During the Revolution, the premises house the central school of the Moselle before receiving the collections resulting from the confiscation measures taken by the Convention. Some 60,000 volumes are gathered from the chapter of the cathedral-which held the most beautiful set of manuscripts-, from the Saint-Sauveur collegial, of the four male abbeys of Saint-Arnould, Saint-Clément, Saint-Symphorien and Saint Vincent, from the Abbey of Women Sainte-Glossinde, as well as the Jesuit, Celestins, Dominican, Great and Small Carmelites, Trinitarians, Recollets, Priests of the Mission, etc. The books that belonged to different ecclesiastical libraries are also attached to it in the vicinity of Metz as well as the collections of several institutions of the old regime such as the order of lawyers in the Parliament of Metz or the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences.

The whole, entrusted to the custody of improvised librarians, is quickly amputated by its most beautiful pieces. The humidity, dust and rodents destroy part of what vandalism and indifference have spared. The city library opens its doors to the public by [ 3 ] , eight years later, with only 25,000 volumes.

Along the XIX It is A century, the collections increased regularly due to the purchases made and thanks to donations from the State, as well as the legacy, sometimes very important, so that the initial fund is multiplied by two around 1880. Among the most remarkable donors, it is necessary to quote Baron Louis Numa de Salis, who left the city 124 manuscripts [ 4 ] , around twenty incunable, a collection of medieval scrolls and several thousand old editions, engravings, drawings.

The collections undergo serious losses during the Second World War when a fire declares the night of the At In two of the three boxes of Fort Saint-Quentin, on the heights of the city, where the most precious documents had been stored: 588 manuscripts disappear on a total of 1,475 inventoried in the general catalog of 1879 and its 1933 supplement, As well as 165 incunabble on 614 volumes of incunable (representing 781 bibliographic units) [ 5 ] .
