Monica Esposito (Genoa, 7 August 1962 – Kyoto, 10 March 2011) was a historic of Italian religions, translator and syologist.
Eminent Taoism specialist of Ming and Qing periods and his texts, is remembered as one of the major scholars of Chinese religions of modern times.

At the age of 4 he moved to Padua with his family. After the classical high school diploma, in 1987 he graduated in Chinese from the Ca ‘Foscari University of Venice with a thesis on the Qi Gong. In the academic years he stayed for study reasons at the Fudan University in Shanghai and the University of Gand in Belgium. He then perfected his studies at the Sorbona in Paris under the direction of Professor Isabelle Robinet, director of the Department of the University of Paris of Studies on the Far East. Later, in 1988, he obtained the diploma of advanced studies on the texts of the Taoist canon. He moved to Shanghai where he studied at the Academy of Social Sciences under the direction of Professor Chen Yaoting. His training was completed in 1993 with a Ph.D. with highest praise In Studies on the Far East with the thesis The Dragon door. The Longmen School of Mount Jingai and its alchemical practices according to the Daozang Xubian (following the Taoist cannon) (The Dragon Porta – The Longmen school of Mount Jin’gai and its alchemical practices deriving from Daozang Xubian, complement to the Taoist canon).

During various stays in China and Tibet, Monica Esposito conducted in -depth studies on the field regarding the practices of Qi Gong, Taiji, Taoism and Buddhism (particularly of Zogchen). After post-dictate studies at the Center of Indian Studies and the Far East of the University of Venice (1994-1995), at Sorbonne in Paris (1995-1997) and at the Kansai University of Osaka, in 1998 he definitively established his own Residence in Kyoto where he married the Swiss university professor Urs App. Between 1998 and 2003 he led studies to Taiwan, Hong Kong and in continental China producing, together with his husband, significant video documentaries on the religions of the Far East.

After being appointed associate professor at the Institute of Humanities of the University of Kyoto (Jinbun Kagaku Kenkūjo) in 2003, Esposito continued his research on the Taoist texts of Ming and Qing periods. Conceived and directed the Daozang jiyao ( [first] ), an international research project with more than 60 scientific collaborators all over the world on the most important collection of Taoist texts of the Qing period. To develop parts of this great project, which began in 2006, Monica Esposito obtained important contributions from the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation (2006-2009 and 2010-2013 [2] ) e dalla Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS; 2008-2011 [3] ).

The scientific research of Monica Esposito focused on the Taoism of Ming and Qing periods, in particular on the “Longmen” tradition (Dragon Porta Del Dragone) in modern Taoism; the inner alchemy (Neidan); the interaction in the late imperial period between Taoism, tantrism and Buddhism; and Tibetan Buddhism (Rdzogs Chen).

He died in 2011, not yet fifty years old, due to a pulmonary embolism, due to a heart disease. After the death of the Esposito, Professor Lai Chi Tim of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a center of studies on Taoist culture, assumed the direction of his project.
