Neville family – Wikipedia

The Neville family (or Nevill ) is a noble English house dating back to the Middle Ages. She particularly distinguished herself during the Deux-Roses War.

Of English strain, the Neville family begins to stand out at the end of XIII ^{It is} century, contributing in particular to the defense of Scottish marches. Ralph Neville is made Baron Neville de Raby in 1295 and thus participated in the model parliament summoned by Édouard I ^is . His grandson John built Raby’s castle between 1367 and 1390.

Throughout its acquisitions, the Neville family becomes one of the most powerful in northern England, and Ralph, John’s son, obtained the title of Count of Westmorland in 1397. The kings who follow one another on the throne of England use this rivalry to their advantage, promoting the Neville to keep the Percy in check.

When the Deux-Roses war broke out, the descendants of Ralph Neville find themselves in the two camps: his grandson Ralph, from his first marriage, chooses the Lancastre camp, while the others, from his second marriage, Store with Richard d’York, who married a member of this family, Cécile Neville. Family power reaches its peak with Richard Neville, count of Warwick right of his wife , which helps Édouard d’York to climb the throne in 1461 and became the most powerful man in the kingdom during the first years of his reign. The two men then blurred, and Warwick briefly managed to deposit Édouard in 1470 before being killed in combat the following year. His branch of the family then loses a good part of his land for the benefit of the crown.

The Neville’s elder branch comes out of the relatively unscathed civil war, but fairly weakened, and the centralizing trends in the Tudor dynasty still begin its power. Following his participation in the northern uprising, the Count of Westmorland Charles Neville must flee from England and the Parliament fell him from his titles in 1571. He died a few years later without descendants, and the elder branch died with him. A younger branch, the Bergavenny barons, still exists to date, with the titles of Count of Abergavenny, count of Lewes and Marquis of Abergavenny.
