The 1989 season of the New Zealand football championship is here 20 It is Edition of the first division championship in New Zealand. There NSL (National Soccer League) brings together fourteen clubs in the country within a single hen, where they compete twice during the season, at home and outside. At the end of the competition, the last in the ranking is relegated and replaced by the best club of the three regional leagues.

It is the club of Napier City Rovers AFC which won the competition after having finished at the top of the final classification, with equal points but a better difference in goals than Mount Maunganui AFC and three points ahead of Mount Wellington AFC. This is the very first title of champion of New Zealand in the history of the club.

The double title holder, Christchurch United AFC, only ends in 6 It is Place, at thirteen points from Napier City Rovers, but still wins a trophy, following his victory in the final of the New Zealand Cup against Rotorua City.
