North American Soccer League 1976 — Wikipedia

The North American Soccer League 1976 is the ninth edition of the North American Soccer League. The same twenty teams that the previous season register in the championship.
Compared to the previous season, two franchises move and change their names. The Baltimore Comets become the Jaws of San Diego and the Denver Dynamo become the Kicks of Minnesota.

It is the Metros-Croatia of Toronto who won this edition by beating the Kicks of Minnesota in the final.

• Compared to the previous season, the Baltimore Comets become the Jaws of San Diego and the Dynamo of Denver become the Kicks of Minnesota.

• The clubs are divided into 2 conferences (Atlantic and Pacific). Each conference being made up of two divisions.
• All the teams play 24 games that are distributed as follows:
  • 2 meetings (one at home and one outside) against the teams of its division
  • 2 meetings (one at home and one outside) against the other teams of the conference
  • 1 meeting (domicile or outside) against six opposite conference teams

The only exceptions are San Antonio, San Diego and Vancouver which have one more reception at the expense of Los Angeles, Portland and Vancouver respectively.

• There is no draw. In the event of equality after 90 minutes, an extension with a 15 -minute gold goal is played. If it ends aimlessly, a penalty shootout takes place.
• The point scale is as follows:
  • Victory: 6 points
  • Defeat: 0 point
  • A bonus point is granted by goal under the limit of 3 goals per game. It should be noted that a winning penalty shootout is worth a goal and therefore an additional point as long as we are within this limit of 3 goals.

• The first three of each division qualify for the playoffs. The first of each division being exempt from the first round of these series.

^A When a score is followed by a letter, it means that the match in question ended with a penalty shootout. If the score registered is 3-2, this means that the winning team won the penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw after the extension.

The first three of each division qualify for the playoffs.
The first of each division qualify directly for the division finals.
The second and third compete in the first round to join them.

Each round takes place in a single match on the field of the best classified in the regular season. In case of equality, after 90 minutes an extension with gold goal of 15 minutes takes place. If no goal is scored, a penalty shootout takes place.

The final takes place at the King County Domed Stadium in Seattle.
