The Panzerbüchse 38 and the Panzerbüchse 39 (abbreviated PZB38 and PZB39) are anti -tank rifles, used by the German army at the start of the Second World War. THE Panzerbüchse 39 is an improved version of Panzerbüchse 38 .

In 1917, the Germans developed the first anti-tank rifle in history, the Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr. This weapon not giving full satisfaction, the German army wishes to acquire a new model during the interwar period. This one, available in 1938, is developed by engineer B. Brauer and bears the name “Panzerbüchse 38” (Pzb 38).

This anti-tank rifle works with a cylinder head system and measures 161.5 cm long for a total mass of 15.9 kg . He pulled a 7.9 cartridge mm . However, the PZB 38 is regularly and is difficult to maintain in the field. The Germans seek to improve this weapon and develop a new model from the following year: the “Panzerbüchse 39” (PZB 39).

This new anti-tank rifle has a total mass slightly lower than its predecessor (12.6 kg ). In order to increase its rate of shooting, two chargers with a capacity of 10 cartridges each are installed on both sides of the barrel: they only serve as a reserve so that the shooters replenish the weapon faster. Its production began in 1940 and stopped a year later: the PZB 39 remains in allocation until 1944, the date on which it was gradually withdrawn from the lines, proving to be helpless in the face of the Allied armored armored vehicles, even if it is still useful against light vehicles.
