The XV of France is completely missing from what constitutes the opening match of the competition at the Stade de France. After respected and not whistled hymns, the Blues undergo the “candles” of Juan Martín Hernández, the precision of the kicks placed by Felipe Contepomi and the profession of the melee of the French stadium, Agustín Pichot. Hitting to the wall skillfully drawn up by catchy Argentinian pumas which intercept a large number of balloons, the Blues, feverish, ensure roughly their conquest in touch and melee, but suffer as soon as the ball arrives in the hands of their hinge and their rear. The Argentines lead to the score throughout the match, and register the only trial of the match by Ignacio Corleto, who concretizes a ball intercepted by Horacio Agulla on a pass from Rémy Martin on the midline, at the 27 It is minute. Several French actions fail near the line. The entry of Sébastien Chabal and Dimitri Szarzewski is not enough to reverse the trend and it is Argentina that wins. If they were to get out only second from their hen, the French expose themselves to having to face New Zealand, a big favorite of the competition, in the quarterfinals in Cardiff

Two players focus the criticisms: Cédric Heymans, tenured in the back and author of a weak performance, especially at the foot, and David Skrela, also weak at the foot, not very inspired to animate the attack, and who missed a penalty against the Posts while France was only 5 points behind (12-17). Skrela is also injured in the Achilles tendon, which makes it fear for its participation in the suite of the competition.

Laurent Benezech, former pillar of the XV of France, calls into question the management of the hours having preceded the meeting, in particular the surplus of emotion caused by the reading of Guy Môquet’s letter to his mother, and the delivery of jerseys by the eights players not having been selected for this first match, who would have “emptied” the players emotionally [ first ] . The players and the tricolor supervision prefer to retain the “thesis of the accident” [ 2 ] .

Notes [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

  • France had never experienced the defeat in a group match in the final of the World Cup until then. She had only conceded a draw at Scotland in 1987 (20-20).
  • With only 3 points registered, the second half of the match was the least prolific in the history of the final phase of the World Cup.
  • Argentina played its third opening match of the World Cup, each time against the organizing country. It was his first victory after two failures against Wales in 1999 (18-23) and Australia (8-24) in 2003.
  • Argentines only used 4 of their 7 replacements.
  • The Argentines played with two pairs of brothers: I. and J. Fernández-Lobbe and Felipe and Manuel Contepomi.
