Since the XII It is A century, the city of Gaillac had become an important city, and required the establishment of new parishes in order to manage the flood of new inhabitants. This is how the monks of the abbey partially transform their church into a parish church, retaining the choir for their offices. After the damage caused by the Hundred Years War then the black plague, the Saint-Michel church, as well as the abbey, still underwent an ordeal between 1562 and 1572, during the wars of religion, when the city undergoes several times fights between Catholics and Protestants. These struggles ended in 1572, with a violent massacre of Protestants. The latter are defenestrated from the abbey and completed in the Tarn by boatmen. Protestants still leave their mark on the building, through the construction of the massive rectangular tower, serving today as a bell tower [ first ] . After this dark episode, the building is restored, over the following two centuries with the materials of the old building, but is again ruined by the French Revolution. The church is then pillaged, then requisitioned, serving as a warehouse and saltpeter plant. New repairs are undertaken under restoration, during which the nave took a neo-classical style, which will last until 1849, when a neo-Roman portal was added to the west [ 2 ] . But even before the end of the work, the Saint-Michel church is classified as historic monuments by list of 1840 [ first ] .
