Sergeant York ( Sergeant York ) is an American film directed by Howard Hawks in 1941.
In 2008, the film entered the National Film Registry for conservation at the Congress Library in the United States.
The film is based on the diary of Alvin Cullum York, one of the most decorated American soldiers of the First World War. Alvin York refused several times to give his authorization to adapt his life to the cinema. He finally yielded to pressure, to be able to finance the creation of an interconfessional biblical school. However, he demanded that his own role be played by actor Gary Cooper. The film was a great commercial success, applauded by criticism: it will be named eleven times to the Oscars, and Gary Cooper will receive the Oscar for best actor.
The true story of Alvin Cullum York, a young countryside believer and pacifist who is a snapping in the American army as an objector of conscience and who will become a hero of the First World War.
