Sylvain Doussau in Maubourguet in August 2011.

Sylvain Doussau , born the In Maubourguet, is a self -taught archaeologist. His knowledge and field experience concern prehistoric times, protohistory, Gallo-Roman antiquity and the Middle Ages of the Bigorre region [ first ] . Its main areas of investigation are the Gallo-Roman period, ancient numismatics and the archeology of the landscape.

Coming from a family of farmers in Maubourguet, Sylvain Doussau is interested in adolescence in archeology as of his adolescence. In 1953, he discovered in surrounding fields of various ancient objects such as fragments of Roman tiles and ceramic shards.

His profession as a site manager in building and public works for twenty-five years (from 1964 to 1989) [ 2 ] , allows him to expand his field of investigations on many archaeological sites of Bigorre.

His professional activities and personal research lead him to multiply prospecting, excavations and discoveries throughout his region. He publishes his work in press articles, specialized journals, but also in personal or collective works. He animates local conferences on the archeology of the region and exhibits the objects discovered in a room in the old municipal school in Maubourguet. Sylvain Doussau defines himself as “archaeodidact” [ 3 ] .

Sylvain Doussau was elected in 1977 to the city council of the city of Maubourguet. Since 1989, he has been deputy mayor, in charge of works.

Sylvain Doussau began his archaeological research in 1966. He then continued: surface prospecting, surveys and excavations, with a particular interest in the site of the Church of Maubourguet. His discoveries allow him to identify the vicus of Saint-Martin of that, the first name of the town. Based on the study of documents from the national archives, Sylvain Doussau found, in 1978, columns (bases and capitals) of the Romanesque cloister of the Saint-Martin monastery of that, reused in the outbuildings of the castle of Labatut-Rivière [ 4 ] . He convinced the town of Maubourguet to acquire them for a partial reconstruction.

Its surface surveys, around the city of Maubourguet and the villages of the Pays de Rivière-Basse, allow it to identify several Gallo-Roman Villae sites, including the Domaine de Saint-Girons in 1971. Following the Discovery of the mosaic to the Ocean god of the domain of Saint-Girons in 1979, in charge of the first excavations, he participated in the release and the study of this mosaic [ 5 ] , [ 6 ] .

His local research and excavations allow him to discover other archaeological objects such as ancient, medieval and modern coins, a bronze ax, polished stone axes and a Mousterian biface.

Bigorre discoveries [ modifier | Modifier and code ]

Sylvain Doussau strives to combine professional life and passion for archeology. Its construction sites, mainly in Tarbes for twenty years, lead it to numerous discoveries in the chief town of the Civitas of the Bigerri at the time of the Roman High Empire.

In 1968, during work in Tarbes, rue Victor-Hugo, he discovered signed ceramics, then in 1969, Gallo-Roman constructions and Merovingian sarcophagi in an enlargement site of the prefecture of the department. In the early 1980s, they were Gallo-Roman fibulae and pottery, followed in 1982, vestiges of the Roman High Empire and finally a Gallo-Roman seaside of an ancient villa on the outskirts of the city.

Sylvain Doussau also participates in official excavations under the direction of the correspondent for the Historical Antiquities of Midi-Pyrénées (Roland Coquerel, then Robert Vié). In 1970 and 1971, he contributed to the excavations of a Gallo-Roman villa in Izaux. In 1982, he joined, in Tarbes, the excavation site of the seaside of the ancient villa of the Ormeau of which he is the inventor.

In 1983, he participated in the excavations on the Castrum Bigorra in Saint-Lézer, then in those of the protohistoric tumulus of Avezac-Prat. At the beginning of 1984, he directed a series of surveys in the church of Maubourguet. He then chained excavations of tumuli on the plateau of Ger, and participated in those of the Gallo-Roman villa of Pouzac which spread from 1987 to 1990.

In 1991 and 1992, Sylvain Doussau returned to the Castrum Bigorra in Saint-Lézer to participate in rescue excavations. In 2009, he traveled to Maubourguet two agrarian terminals of the Roman high-Empire, before their destruction by a road work.

He concentrates his research on the Roman cadastre of the Adour valley, territory of Bigerrones, and published a first inventory in 1996 [ 7 ] . He complements his panoply of archaeologist tools by acquiring and piloting a three-axis ULM, paving him the way for air archeology from 1998. In 2008, Sylvain Doussau identifies and obtained the conservation in- Situing a Gamma Roman agrarian and cadastral terminal, discovered on the occasion of the Road Deviation site ( D 935 ) of Maubourguet.
