The Jackson family or The Jacksons , an American dream ^{[ first ] , [ 2 ]} ( The Jacksons: An American Dream ) is a two-part biographical mini-series totaling 240 minutes, scripted by Joyce Eliason, produced by Karen Arthur and broadcast the 15 and November 18, 1992 on the ABC network.

This telefilm is based on the history of the Jackson family, one of the most famous American families in the show industry, from the beginnings to years of success at the Motown thanks to the group The Jackson Five.

In France, the mini-series was broadcast in nine episodes of 28 minutes, under the title The Jackson family in December 1993 in the show High on France 2. It is rebroadcast of August 16, 1995 ^{[ 3 ]} At August 28, 1995 ^{[ 4 ]} , still on France 2.

In 2002, she was remastered and reduced to two 90 -minute TV movies and broadcast under the title The Jacksons, an American dream . It is rebroadcast on June 24, 2012 ^{[ 5 ] , [ 6 ]} as part of Special day Michael Jackson, King of the Pop ^{[ 7 ] , [ 8 ]} On Arte.

Joe Jackson, a young musician, meets a young woman, Katherine Jackson, during a party. Therefore, he will make sure to see her as often as possible while she pushes her advances. But the young woman discovers an attraction to the musician then she will eventually go out with him.

Later, the couple will live in a house in Gary (Indiana), too narrow for the development of their children.

While Joe has abandoned his future as a musician to work at the city factory, Katherine raises her children by living on their savings.

One evening, Joe discovers that one of his children played his instrument and beats him before the eyes of his brothers. He will realize that his children have potential for music.

At this moment, he will engage in a frantic pace in order to have them signed in a record company. This is what Berry Gordy of the Motown will do which will guide them to the summit of glory. The jacksons will end up over the success they have caused, headed younger Michael Jackson.

In France, in 1993 the series released in VHS at France Television Distribution ^{[ first ] , [ 2 ]} in 1993. In two parts: “Birth of a myth” (2:30) and “Conquer the world” (1h30).
Following the remastering of the series, in 2002, certain original passages were deleted so that the mini-series became two 1:30 TV movies. As for French dubbing, it has been completely modified. Thus, for example, Joseph Jackson, doubled by Med Hondo in 1992, was doubled by Thierry Desroses during the 2002 remastering. This version was broadcast on Arte but was not marketed in DVD in France.
