The Mighty Lemon Drops is an independent British rock group, from Wolverhampton, England. The Mighty Lemon Drops is part of the 1986 Pop and Noisy-Pop wave, and appears on the C86 compilation, with the title Happy Head . The group will release five albums before separating.

Originally called Sherbet Monsters ^{[ first ]} , the quartet was formed in the spring of 1985 in Wolverhampton, The Black Country ^{[ 2 ]} . Paul Marsh, Dave Newton and Tony Linehan played together in a group called active restraint in 1982, with Newton who later trained the group The Wild Flowers. Dave Newton and Tony Linehan are the main composers. Their musical style is described Psychedelia influenced post-punk, played with a Rickenbacker guitar ^{[ first ]} .

After losing their drummer Martin Gilks ​​(later The Wonder Stuff), the drops now understand Paul Marsh (vocals), David Newton (guitar), Tony Linehan (bass), and Keith Rowley (drums). In December 1985 , the quartet, now renamed The Mighty Lemon Drops, publishes a first independent single, Like an Angel , at the DreamWorld Records label in Daniel Treacy des Television Personalities who will reach the UK Indie Chart and will sell in 14,000 copies. They also record a session for John Peel during this period. Now an integral part of the C86 movement, they are signed by Geoff Travis by Rough Trade for his new label, Blue Guitar, a branch of Chrysis Records. They sign with Sire Records in North America at the same period.

Derek Jarman produces a clip for the single Out of Hand in 1987 which was followed by the hit Inside Out In 1988. In the United Kingdom, albums Happy Head And World Without End reach the rankings ( #58 and #33 respectively). In the USA, World Without End is classified first of the Modern Rock/College in 1988 and Happy Head is cited in the list of the 50 best albums of the year established by the magazine Sounds ^{[ 3 ]} . The group separates from Chrysalis after three albums ( Happy Head , World Without End And Laughter ), but remains signed with Sire in the US, publishing the album Laughter , who reaches the Billboard 200 in 1990. During the sessions of Laughter , Linehan leaves the group and is replaced by Marcus Williams ^{[ 2 ]} .

The group publishes two other albums, Sound … Say Goodbye to Your Standards And Ricochet Before separating in 1992. Three other albums follow (Live albums All the Way And Young, Gifted, and Black Country , and the best-of Rollercoaster ).

In 2011, Newton produced the third album, Turn and Face Me de The Blood Arm ^{[ 4 ]} . In March 2014, the group published Uptight: The Early Recordings 1985–1986 , chez Cherry Red Records. ^{[ 5 ]} .
