During the construction of the giant ramp which will allow Jagang to attack the fief of the Rahl, the soldiers of the order discover catacombs at the foot of the palace as well as secret access which leads to the tomb of Panis Rahl, Grand- paternal father of Richard. Sister Arminia as well as two other sisters of the darkness capture Nicci after having killed the former lady Abbess Annalina, while the latter were looking for the grave. For his part, Rachel, haunted by “Korrigans”, fled from the palace in the direction of Tamarang, now governed by the LED Six who seized the Orden box which was in possession of Zedd and Nicci. The sisters of darkness discover what they believe to be the original of Grimoire of shadows identified .

Having beat all the teams of Ja’la, the Richard team, all tinged with red to hide it in the eyes of Jagang, confronts and beats the emperor’s team in the tournament final. But Jagang, refusing to accept the defeat of his team, announces that the victory is not valid, because he has repeatedly canceled Richard’s points. This unfair decision provokes a riot in the camp, during which Richard manages to escape with Nicci, while Kahlan is “saved” by Samuel. Richard and Nicci (helped by Adie) return to the palace by the catacombs, where Nathan and Cara help destroy the armies of the order which had remained hidden there.

Rachel, a newly prisoner of the Fallen Queen Violette, returns the spell of which she is the victim against her former torturer and kills her. She also gives her donation to Richard, which causes the back of the blood beast. Nicci continues Richard’s learning on magic, and he must return to Tamarang to recover the legacy that the last war wizard bequeathed to him. In the meantime, Kahlan recovers part of his memories following his contact with the sword of truth, due to the attempted rape of Samuel. Richard finds his beloved, but must hide his love to him until the opening of the Orden boxes so that the effects of the counter-discussion of the flame chain are complete. They find Zedd, Rikka and Friedrich imprisoned in the cell where Richard hid his inheritance for some time before. Shota then intervenes to get rid of six and release the dragon from the grip of his rival, which is none other than the egg that Richard saved shortly before the death of Darken Rahl for years earlier.

Leaving for the People’s Palace for the opening of Orden boxes, Jagang and the last seven sisters of the dark invade the palace and the garden of life. Nicci controls Jagang with a radi’han, while the sisters are sucked in by the boxes. Nicci takes revenge on the humiliations inflicted on him by Jagang and Richard sends the army of the imperial order to a world devoid of magic as well as Jennsen and the Bandakar people, who wanted to leave a magical world where they do not have their place. Richard informs his half-sister that he also sent the flame chain to it as well as the contamination of the chips while the mother inquisitor finds her memory.

It is once again Raphaël Lacoste who is responsible for carrying out the illustration for the French version of this volume. The Bragelonne editions had indeed decided very early, with the agreement of the author, not to take up the illustrations made by Keith Parkinson for the final trilogy.
