The Way, la route ensemble (or The Way – On the way to Compostela in Quebec ; The Way in the original version (English) and Spain; The way In Latin America) is an American-Spanish film directed by Emilio Estevez, released in theaters in Spain in 2010, in the United Kingdom and the USA in 2011, in France in 2013 and on DVD in 2012.

Thomas Avery (Martin Sheen), an American ophthalmologist, learns the death of his son Daniel (Emilio Estevez), in France, in the Pyrenees, while he walked on the pilgrimage path of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostela.

Tom goes to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to recognize and bring Daniel’s body back. But once there he decides, after having made the cremation of the body carried out, to transport the ashes himself to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. He then started walking around 800 km , meeting other pilgrims, three of whom are particularly going to accompany him in this adventure. Each of them undertakes this pilgrimage with a particular motivation, hoping to find a solution to their problem in this long step.

Tom, first quite individualistic, will gradually get attached to his fellow travelers and thus understand what had been able to bring his son, with whom he had few contacts, to make this pilgrimage.

The original idea of ​​the film came from the son of Emilio Estevez, Taylor. The latter, at the age of 19, had made the pilgrimage with his grandfather, Martin Sheen [ 4 ] . This pilgrimage had marked him as much as he had met there who will become his wife [ 5 ] .

Emilio Estevez finds his father Martin Sheen a few years after having directed him in Bobby , released in 2006. Martin Sheen had nevertheless suggested Mel Gibson and Michael Douglas for the main role, but the director-scenarist had specifically written the character for his father [ 6 ] .

The role of Doreen, the secretary of Tom, is held by Renée Estevez, the daughter of Martin Sheen and the sister of Emilio Estevez.
