The Lake theater (“Théâtre du Lac”) is a performance hall located on the western shore of Lanquihue Lac in Futillar, in the Lakes region, in Chile. It is, with an area of ​​more than 10,000 m² [ first ] , the largest concert space to have been created in Chile since the 1950s [ 2 ] .

In 1996, the entrepreneur Guillermo Schiess had the idea of ​​building a new cultural center to be able to continue to welcome the musical weeks of Puttillar after the fire of the Putillar Hotel where they took place until then. Schiess submits his project to the cultural society of the musical weeks of Puttillar ( Cultural Corporation Musical Weeks of Frutillar ), who accepts this proposal [ first ] .

After the death of Guillermo Schiess in 1998, the project management was taken up by his daughter Nicola Schiess and her husband Uli Bader. The architectural design is entrusted to the architects Gerardo Köster and Gustavo Greene [ 2 ] , which according to Schiess’s instructions develop the plans of a theater capable of receiving symphonic orchestras [ 3 ] . Construction begins the [ 4 ] , thanks to private funding. The work suffers from delays, mainly due to the Asian financial crisis [ first ] and the original project is changed in order to also be able to agree to the representation of operas [ 3 ] .

In The architectural firm Amecanda joins the project, with the aim of improving thermal and acoustic insulation, on the advice of acoustic engineers of the company Müller-BM [ 3 ] . The exterior lighting of the building is entrusted to the company Limarí Lightning Design and the design of stage lighting is made by the American company Clifton Taylor [ first ] .

The theater was inaugurated on after 12 years of work [ 4 ] , for an investment of around 20,000,000 US dollars [ first ] .

The facade of the building recalls that of warehouses coated with shingles built by German immigrants, typical of the region. Wooden slats of different colors have been used to modernly recall the aging of these hangars [ first ] .

Inside, the building includes a large auditorium, the Tronador-Salle Nestlé space ( Tronador-Sala Space Nestlé ) which can accommodate 1,178 spectators (spread over a plateau and two galleries) with an orchestra pit for 100 musicians. The walls of this main room are garnished with around 800 laminated wooden panels. There is also an amphitheater with 270 seats and four versatile rooms [ first ] , [ 2 ] .

An art school ( Arts ) is associated with the Teatro del Lago in the Casa Richter , a heritage home from 1895. The musical section includes in particular violin and classic guitar classes. The Teatro del Lago also finances an academic orchestra of young musicians [ 5 ] , as well as a set of resident chamber music ( Resident assembly ) with piano, violin, flute and cello [ 6 ] .
